Good day to you!

Ian Cameron here on what's been kind of a drizzly, and cloudy Wednesday morning. No matter, rain or shine, this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! I'm writting to you to to encourage you in your study of God's word, especially when it comes to studying the smaller books in the new testament. I'm no expert, certainly not a theologian, but there's something I've found to be so useful when it comes to Bible study. Books like first and second Timothy, Colossians, Galatians, first, second, and third John; though they might seem less important because they're smaller, these letters are absolutely jam-packed with spiritual goodness!

Because I'm not naturally an avid reader, when I first started studying the Bible, I would typically do just one or two chapters a day. This isn't necessarily a bad way to study, but by only reading small chunks of scripture at a time, it's really easy to focus too much on smaller details, and miss the big picture, and what was the intention of the letter. There are three important rules to live by when it comes to doing a good study of the Bible, context, context, and (bonus points if you guessed the last one) more context! I've found that if I read these books all the way through in one sitting, I can get a much better idea of what's actually going on, be it with the author's relationship with the church, or the actual church itself.

There were a lot of the smaller books that I was under the impression that I had a very good understanding of, especially the book of James. But when you read the book multiple times, especially in a single sitting, the Lord is able to teach you so much more about what you're reading; there's likely so much more there than you realized!. Not to mention, reading these letter all at once is exactly how they were intended to be written in the first place. Again, because I'm not one who naturally enjoys reading, it can seem to be a daunting task. In reality, Galatians or Colossians only takes me about 20-25 minutes to read all the way through, and that's with stopping multiple times to reread scriptures that really stood out. Even when I was leading a Bible study on 1 Corinthians, I would read the 16 chapters in a single sitting, and that would only take this slow reader an hour an a half.

The more time we spend in the scriptures, the better off we'll be! After all, the Bible prepares us for every good work, we ought use it to lead us, teach us, and guide us. Most importantly, Ephesians 6 describes the word of God as our sword of the spirit; what kind of a soldier goes into battle without knowing how to use their weapons? Let's not just read our Bible to ensure we're meeting the daily Christian duties, but read it, study it so we can know more of God, and how to serve Him!!

Be Blessed,

Ian Cameron
