Bear sightings on the decline… in Sudbury

It may be okay to pull out the picnic basket… if you’re careful. Complaints about nuisance bears Sudbury… are on a decline, according to numbers collected by the city. While there were several sightings in the early spring, better growing weather has meant there’s more food in the bush. So far, there have been 341 bear sightings reported to the line, including a rash of sightings last week where a bear was scene rooting through garbage.


West Nile in Northern Ontario?

A number of cases of west-nile virus, has been reported in Ontario. So far human infection cases have been reported in Temiskaming Shores, Ottawa and Windsor. While nothing has been diagnosed in Sudbury, North Bay or Timmins… the health unit says they will continue to monitor surveillance sites throughout the region through the third week of September.


Curling club remains in operation

A small but mighty contingent of Copper Cliff Curling Club members were at the club last night, in a rally attempt to save the club from closure. All votes in, the club found itself with five new board members and a four-person executive who will work together to come up with a plan to keep the rocks sliding. This is following an attempt to consolidate with Sudbury Curling Club in order to attempt to stabilize both clubs.


One community will soon be on gas?

East Ferris could soon be on Natural Gas. It’s one of 45 community areas across Ontario to apply to Union Gas and the Ontario Energy Board for natural gas lines, specifically, into the village of Astroville. The proposed project could serve 185 potential customers, along with the library and school.


Lake-side build going ahead

A Sudbury developer has won an appeal to build homes and apartments on Keast Drive in Sudbury. Norm Eady has fought for several years to proceed with his development next to Ramsey Lake, and now will be permitted to build 54 single-family homes and 93 apartment units on 48 acres of land he owns, despite concerns there could be an impact on the waterway.


Watch for the new stop signs!

North Bay City Council approved the installation of a four-way stop at the corner of Main Street West and Cassells Street at this week. The measure was recommended after the location was subject to a traffic count and analysis from city staff.


Woman looking for missing tools

One woman says she’s looking for help after her gardening tools. A former Heritage Gardener volunteer who is self-employed, her “tools of the trade” that fell out of the back of her truck Tuesday. They are worth about $400 and were in a red Lee Valley garden tool bag.

They went missing at about 3:15 p.m. on the escarpment between Laurentian Ski Hill and Airport Road.
