Bricks and blocks used in break-in’s

More information has come on a mid-month smash and grab in North Bay. This is after North Bay Police attended an business on Fisher Street, where a laptop was taken. Police found that a cement block was used to smash the window. This came just one day after police responded so a call on Lakeshore Drive, where a brick was used to break the window.


Memorial set up for Organ Donors

A new epitaph has been erected in Greater Sudbury… which aims to honour organ donors. The stone monument has been erected along Lorne Street at Oak Street, and includes flower beds and a flag pole. Two benches are also expected to be added.


Angus is back after family death

An NDP leadership hopeful Charlie Angus is back on the campaign trail today. This is after the passing of Angus’ sister last week, prompting a near two-week break. He says he will be back on the campaign trail on Monday after planning and attending her funeral.


18 fires in the region, none on concern

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says that, despite the fact that there are 18 active fires in the region, many are being observed to allow ecological benefits to occur naturally. The fire hazard is currently low to high across the region.


Blue-Green Algae detected in Nipissing

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says that they’ve issued an alert after blue-green algae was detected in Callander Bay on Lake Nipissing over the weekend. The municipal water supply is not affected as the plant is equipped to remove the toxin.


Being Bear-Wise in the North

Hikers in North Bay are being reminded to be bear wise. This is after a sighting of a black bear just before the weekend in the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area, in the vicinity of Vincent Massey School. A 72-hour bear sighting notice will expire today.


Looking for those responsible for a set gill net

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is seeking the public’s help in identifying the people responsible for abandoning a set gill net. It was found in Lake Wolsey on Manitoulin Island. Over 40 pounds of dead fish, including walleye, yellow perch, and small mouth bass were also found.


City Council set to tear down fire-damaged building

Soo City Council will be asked today to approve demolition Church Street single detached dwelling. The building Torched two years ago by an arsonist. Estimates for the job are being pegged at $23,000.
