Wanted: 44-year-old Darren Saile

Greater Sudbury Police continue their search today for a wanted 44-year-old, believed to be in the Sudbury area. Darren Saile is also wanted on charges of uttering threats, criminal harassment, and breaching probation. Saile stands 6-1 and weighs 220 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.


North Bay Schools headed to strike?

Despite the school year being less than two weeks old, Canadore College teachers in North Bay say they’re joining faculty from across the province today choosing between the classroom and potentially joining picket lines. This is over a 7.5 per cent wage increase over four years increasing maximum wages for full-time instructors.


Timmins Tax rates headed for a hike

Timmins tax rates are now set moving forward into the fall. City Council approved a residential 2.14 per cent tax increase at a special meeting of council yesterday. That works out to roughly to a $125 increase. Mayor Steve Black told the press yesterday, the goal is make sure 2018 tax rates stay the same or decrease.


More training and resources needed

Sudbury Police chief Paul Pederson says that as the provincial and federal governments move forward with legislation to legalize marijuana by next summer, they also need to step up, when it comes to ensuring local forces get more training and drug detection equipment. Pederson told the press this week, that it’s logical to presume there’s going to be more consumption, once the drug is legal and there is a growing need for resources.


Laurentian Facility looking for deal

The Laurentian Faculty Association says they’ll could be nearing a strike mandate vote. This is regards to an agreement regarding wage hikes and workload. The group says they’ve been without a collective agreement since June 30th.

The need for Canadore College and Nipissing University to stock up on naloxone kits is “imminent”. That’s according to the management of health, safety, security and services at the school. They say that while the school has not had to face an opioid-related overdoses, the potential exists.

Timmins Porcupine Search and Rescue have put in a request with Timmins city council to set up shop, using the Whitney fire hall, now that a new fire hall is being built at Northern College. This is after it was revealed the group needs a place to store its vehicles and equipment, and to carry out training. Several council members said they are open to the idea, which has been put in the hands of city staff.


M’Chigeeng chief the youngest in community history.

Linda Debassige has been elected this week in M’Chigeeng to take office of Chief within the community. The Manitoulin Island resident is the second woman to fill the role as well as M’Chigeeng’s youngest ever leader.
