Dentist goes down with the plane

A Northern Ontario dentist has died following plane crash. It happened over Lake Huron. The announcement was made after Dr. Edward Grodecki was located deceased still inside the ‘heavily damaged’ two-seat Cessna 150 J plane that he was travelling in. This is after witnesses on the ground reported seeing a small airplane ‘in distress’ near Goderich Airport. Grodecki was a successful oral surgeon with offices in Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, Timmins, and Sudbury.


Busted for selling drugs, outside a clinic

Two women have been charged, after allegedly trying to sell prescription drugs, outside a Medical Clinic. It happened on Cedar Street in Greater Sudbury over the weekend. Both now face a total of four counts of trafficking a controlled substance and four counts of possession of property obtained by crime.


Millions to be had?

The city of North Bay will consider jumping into an opportunity, worth tens of millions in prizes. Known as the “Smart Cities Challenge”, the federally funded initiative encourages communities to innovate and do things differently through the use of technology and data. Three rounds are planned, each to include one large prize of $50 million dollars.


More warm weather, more Blue-Green Algae

The warm weather across the North drove many to beach, but some near Remi Lake in Moonbeam were forced to make other arrangements. Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and the Porcupine Health Unit says the lake still tests positive for blue-green algae, the toxins of which may be harmful to humans and animals.


Two rescued by OPP following storm

A man and woman have been rescued by the OPP after getting caught in a severe thunderstorm. It happened just before the weekend. The couple were on Ella Lake near Nairn Centre. Darkness and poor weather caused them to become stranded and disoriented and police.


Board meets this week, on North Bay Schools

This week the Near North District School Board is slated to meet to either adopt or reject a committee of the whole recommendation to refurbish two public high schools and close a third, rather than build one mega secondary school facility. According to the recommendation, Widdifield Secondary School could shut down , while Chippewa, West Ferris Intermediate and Secondary School will be refurbished.


No explosive plant, thank you.

Opponents of plans to build an explosives plant in Nairn Centre will have their day in court. This is after the construction of an explosive plant was announced. The Sudbury-based Consbec Inc. facility would employ up to 12 people and would include an annual contribution of $18,000 to help cover Nairn Centre’s infrastructure needs.


Timmins Resident, still missing

The search for a missing 44-year-old Timmins man is ongoing. Christopher Rivers was reported missing late last month. The only update in the case was that in early September the vehicle Rivers was believed to be driving was found near Murphy Road, which sparked a two-day ground search. Details on Rivers, along with a photo can be found by going to KFM radio.ca

The flags City Halls’ and other municipal buildings flew at half-staff in honour of Canadian Police and Peace Officer’s Memorial Day on Sunday. This National Memorial Day gives Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, who made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe.
