Widdifield Secondary will Close

Widdifield Secondary School, in North Bay, is closing its doors. Trustees voted in favour of closing the home of the WildCats, leaving Chippewa and West Ferris open. The move is being considered a consolidation from three high schools down to two, and follows the recommendation of the Accommodation Review Committee.



Fatal rollover in Sudbury leaves one dead

A Sudbury-area man is man is dead following a single-vehicle collision. The incident happened this week, near Dryden. Police say it happened when 40-year-old Michael Gibson, allegedly lost control of line painting truck was travelling southbound when it lost control and left the roadway, rolling over.



Sault Ste. Marie will make a run at Amazon opportunity

Sault Ste. Marie could be Amazon’s second headquarters. As one of the world’s richest companies looks for a second North American home, the Sault has will be putting in a bid. Sault Ste. Marie city council voted unanimously Monday night to put in a bid for Amazon’s second headquarters, a $5 billion project that could come with as many as 50,000 jobs.



Timmins Hospital looking to boost budget

Budget was on the mind of the Timmins and District Hospital board as the board returned to business as usual this week. The board says that three-quarters of the budget is spent on salaries and benefits, which they have little control over, but add they are looking into alternative revenue streams in increase and improve operations.



Noise bylaws gets passed to later meeting

In Greater Sudbury, efforts to narrow down the 26 noise bylaws in the city regulating noise will have to wait quietly for the time being. Hopes to bring the bylaws down to a one hit a snag Tuesday, with city councilors voting to defer a vote until staff has another look.



Dog owner in court today

The owner of two dogs thought to be responsible for the death of a third dog is in court this week. She is charged with failing to keep care and control of the family dogs, a 100-pound mastiff and a 60-pound husky. Following the attack, a Norwegian elkhound had to be euthanized because of injuries.



Man facing a number of charges following dispute

OPP out of Iroquois Falls say a family dispute turned violent, forcing someone to call Police to a Marion Street residence. A man in his 20’ is facing a number of charges, including resist peace officer, uttering threats, and damage to property. He remains in custody until his next court date in Timmins.



Click-it or Ticket

OPP in Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins and the Sault are reminding drivers to Click it or Ticket. Today, Police from across the Province are launching the SeatBelt Safety Campaign today. Driver can expect to be stopped in RIDE check style stations for the rest of the month into October, so that officer can ensure everyone is buckled up. Constable Carlo Berardi says it goes far beyond following the law.

Failing to ensure the proper use of a seatbelt can come with fines of between $200 and $1000 along with demerit points.


Two new fires in the North East

Two new forest fires have been discovered in the Northeast Region. One in Parry Sound that is being held and one in Algonquin Park not under control at 0.1 hectares. The fire hazard is low in the northern portions of the region and moderate to high in the southern portions of the region.
