Speed limit remains at 80kph on MR80

Sudbury drivers will have to remain under an 80k/per hour limit this morning… when it comes to Municipal Road 80. The reduction of the speed limit, north of Turner Avenue that was only supposed to last until the end of the week, will continue until December 1st.


Investigation continues following 4-vehicle accident

OPP out of North Bay say more is known regarding the four-vehicle collision which snarled traffic on the Bypass at Frost Street this week. They say a northbound grey car crossed the centre line, struck a stopped vehicle head on in the southbound lane, and then struck two other vehicles before coming to a stop. One was taken to hospital.


Sault Ste. Marie students back to school today

It will be business as usual for students heading out White Pines Collegiate and Vocational School in the Sault today, after it was evacuated yesterday following bomb threat. No devices were located and officers eventually cleared the scene.


$5 000 000 worth of mining supplies coming to Timmins

The mining supply and service sector for Timmins got another boost this week. It came in the form of $5-million-dollars worth of investments this week announced by Northern Development Minister Michael Gravelle. Gravelle says that, around the world, Ontario has a reputation as a global mining hub with 39 mines operating.


Missing Teen, found safe and sound

A teenage girl missing for more than a week has been located in good health. Elana Faries, who disappeared on Sept. 17 from the New Sudbury area, is now accounted for and safe and sound.


Valve causing issues in Greater Sudbury

A problem with a valve is causing widespread water issues in Sudbury this morning. City crews are conducting emergency repairs to fix the problem, but the repair work could last more than 12 hours. Residents will experience fluctuating water pressure and discolouration. The city expects repairs to be completed by 6 p.m. today.


Leave the nets… they’re okay

Lake Nipissing fishermen being warned not to start pulling walleye fish nets out of the water. The Province says that in partnership with Nipissing First Nation, they are conducting research and data collection on waterway again this fall. Nets will be placed in the water during October.  Fish collected will be sampled for length, weight, gender, maturity, and age..


Homeless numbers in Timmins at 1.7%

Timmins is receiving fresh data on the number of homeless in the city. This is all apart of the Summit For Solving Homelessness, held this week. The most recent stats identifies 1.7% of the city’s population as homeless, 80% of stay in a make shift location. Social agency representatives from across Cochrane say they’re looking into ways provide better assistance.


Algoma set to clear debt to city by next spring

The City of Sault Ste. Marie says that $500,000 per month will represent the property tax payments from Algoma. This, according the city keeps the steelmaker in good standing. The increased payments, if approved, will allow for the monthly payments to continue until March 31, 2018


Sudbury College sits at 10-year high for enrollment

Cambrian college in Sudbury is showing a 10-year high when it comes to enrollment. Roughly 4,400 full-time student’s area at the Barrydowne campus in Sudbury, the highest number since 2008. International student enrolment is up by 61 percent over last year, with 573 students from 39 countries registered.


LU professors on strike

Laurentian University’s professors are on strike. The University Faculty Association had advised management that it had gone on strike as of 12:01 a.m. this morning, after failing to effort to negotiate a new collective agreement. The two sides met this week with the help of a mediator, but without success. Laurentian has 367 full-time faculty.


Man wanted for questioning for fishing activity


The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is looking to identify a man, seen now in a sketch released from the OPP. He is wanted for questioning about alleged illegal fishing activity on Depot Creek in Boulter Township.


Work underway in Hollinger

Work is underway in Timmins this week, at the Hollinger Park in Timmins. The hope is that the remediation will be complete in time for next summer’s Stars and Thunder music festival. The remediation work is being done to satisfy the concerns raised last year when it was revealed that the soil higher than higher-than-normal amounts of arsenic and heavy metals

This week OPP from Sudbury, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins all jumped into the fall seatbelt safety campaign. While wearing a seat belt is the law for motorists Nation Wide, Constable Carlo Berardi says, it goes far beyond… simply the law.

Fines for not buckling up range from $200 – $1000, along with two demerit points.


Northern voted to be tax-exempt

Sudbury city council has voted to make the Northern Water Sports Centre a municipal facility, if approved, it would mean the facility will no longer need to pay city taxes amounting to $53,000 annually. However, staff say they would like the group to return bring in a draft lease agreement before finalizing any decision.
