81-year-old dead in traffic accident

The Sudbury OPP has confirmed that an 81-year-old woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 on October 1st, 2017. The OPP said the driver of a Toyota Corolla pulled onto Highway 17 from a private drive at 12:49 p.m., and the vehicle was struck in the eastbound lane by a GMS Cutaway van. The driver of the Toyota Corolla, 81-year-old Milja Leduc from Wahnapitae, Ontario has died as a result of her injuries. No charges were laid.

Roll-over proves fatal for Sudbury man

A 23-year old truck driver from Sudbury involved in a rollover on Municipal Road 80 on Monday has died. The single-vehicle accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. on Monday near the Tracks and Wheels store. The vehicle appeared to have struck a rock cut before flipping upside-down. Police responded along with ambulance and fire services.

“Closed Door Meeting” for Sudbury City Council

Sudbury city Council held a 3-hour closed-door meeting yesterday over the issue of fired firefighters. According to the group’s union, eight of their members were disciplined and three were terminated for speaking against a “contentious fire optimization plan”.

Routes back on schedule

The school bus driver shortage has been largely alleviated in Sudbury. This is a month into the school year. This is according to the Sudbury Student Services Consortium. When the school year began, bus drivers who were “doubling up” — doing two routes. This is no longer the case.

Two charged following a traffic stop

Two people from North Bay face drug trafficking charges. This is after being pulled over for an obstructed window Friday in Fergus. A subsequent search found the occupants were in possession of a large amount of marijuana, drug trafficking equipment and a large amount of cash.

Vezina takes over as Pres’ and Vice-Chancellor at Algoma U

The Algoma University Board of Governors says Asima Vezina will assume the role of President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University effective October 23, 2017. Asima is very well known to the community of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas. She has worked as the Superintendent of Education with the Timmins and Algoma District School Boards.

United way launches annual campaign in Timmins

United Way Centraide North East Ontario has launched their annual campaign. The campaign launched this week aims help all 350,000 residents in the region, rather than focusing on financial goals. The group says this year’s campaign will run for a full year.

Traffic safety an issue at North Bay city council

Another collision at the Algonquin and Lansdowne avenues in North Bay had some approaching the city about safety, and speed limits. There has been a call from some to see the inclusion of a community safety zone reduction in the speed limit to 40 from 50 km/h.

Timmins man pleads-out in BC court

A 29-year-old man, originally from Timmins has pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the 2016 killing of a woman in B.C.. The deceased is Vikki Heppner, a woman who has Northern Ontario ties. Heppner was reportedly under investigation at the time by RCMP in Fort McMurray after more than $24,000 raised in a gofundme.com campaign to find her.

Broken main slows drivers

A broken water main in Sault Ste. Marie has been repaired. It resulted in a traffic restriction on Queen Street East. This road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of repair crews as well as the travelling public and the city thanks the public for their understanding and cooperation.

New 4-way-stop in North Bay

Those in North Bay are being warned of a new 4-way-traffic stop. The city has made changes at the intersection of Cassells Street and Main Street West. The change is permanent. Council passed By-Law No. 2017-58 authorizing the new stop signs on August 22.

Power outage leaves residence

An unplanned power interruption knocked the lights out for roughly 1,100 customers yesterday in Sault Ste. Marie. Power has been restored to all customers. If you are still without power please call the PUC Emergency number at 759-6555.
