Another move forward for the Arena/Event Centre

The events centre on the Kingsway in Greater Sudbury, took another move forward yesterday at Tom Davis Square. Approved was the evaluation criteria for the selection of a proponent to design and build the events centre. Cost and quality, both weighted at 35 per cent of the evaluation will join the development schedule; project and design and construction all worth 10 per cent.
 

Death treated as homicide

The death of Joseph Topping is being treated as a homicide. Remains identified as the missing Elliot Lake man were found in a wooded area within the City of Elliot Lake on Feb. 14. Yesterday, a post-mortem examination was concluded in Sault Ste. Marie.
 

Ford makes Campaign Stops in the North

Doug Ford stopped in both North Bay and Sudbury yesterday, on the campaign trail for the leadership for the Ontario PC party. Ford promised to be a voice for the Northern Ontarians. The Toronto Politician told a packed hall of about roughly 200 supporters, that Sudburians were down to earth, real people, and grassroots, ignored by their Provincial Government. The election for the PC lead is early march.
 

Another water main break, another sinkhole

North Bay city crews found themselves looking into another sinkhole in the city yesterday. This one, nearly 5 feet wide. Opening up, just before the afternoon commute, the hole closed Main St. between Timmins and Cormack St. A 12-inch water main break has been blamed for the cause. Meanwhile, emergency maintenance to a service valve in Timmins begins today. It’s happening at the waste water pollution plant on Airport Road. The public utilities department is expecting a two-day repair and detours will be in place.
 

Strike held off for Sault Ste. Marie Paramedics

Strike action from Sault Ste. Marie Paramedics was help off last night, not from the front line, but from board room. A last-minute decision from Ontario Labour Relations Board delayed the legal strike by paramedics that was to begin at midnight on February 28. Details aside an interim ‘injunction’ has been granted until a scheduled hearing in Toronto on March 12. Unifor will be able to appeal the ruling, March 7.
 

Wanted: Robbie Sewell, 32

The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a federal offender, who could be in Sudbury. Robbie SEWELL is described as a Caucasian male, 32 years of age, 5′ 8″ (175cm), 180 lbs (82 kg) with brown hair and blue eyes. He has tattoos on both forearms. He is serving a just under 5 years for Break and Enter, Theft, Possession of a restricted Weapon and drug possession.
