Fire destroys garage

Fire has destroyed a large double-bay garage. It happened at a property on Highway 17 was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon. North Bay Fire and Emergency Services, which responded to the call shortly after noon. Reports say smoke and flames billowing out of the structure’s windows, eaves and roof. With nine firefighters from two stations, the blaze was quickly under control. A wood stove is being blamed, damage is pegged at $75,000.
 

Man facing charges in licence plate quick change

A 38-year old man Greater Sudbury man is faces charges. This is after allegedly a stealing a licence plate from a vehicle from a service lot just before the weekend. It all began when a pick-up truck with unauthorized plates on Mountain Street in Greater Sudbury was taken to the yard. A few hours later, the individual entered the lot, removed a licence plate from another vehicle in the compound, placed a previously stolen licence plate on the truck and drove off of the lot. They are facing a raft of charges.
 

Manor nurses win two-year contract

Unionized nurses at the Golden Manor in Timmins are breathing a little deeper. They have won a new two-year employment contract. Reports indicate that this will see them getting a 1.4% increase in their first year, followed by a 1.75% increase for the second year. The new contract is retroactive to April 1 of 2018 and continues to March 31, 2020.
 

Sault College expanding international footprint

A post secondary college is getting the grade on its international involvement. This is as Sault College says they’re starting to recruit international students to train them to help local employers fill jobs. It’s all in attempts to draw students from other countries to attend the Sault Ste. Marie post-secondary institution. Sault College anticipates more than 500 international students on campus in January. That number is expected to grow to 700 by fall 2019.
 

Colleges expecting a “key” report today

A number of Northern Ontario Colleges are going to be checking the report card today. Key Performance Indicators are expected today for Ontario’s 24 colleges including Cambrian College, College Borreal, Canadore College, Northern College and Sault College. Institutions are ranked from 1-24 in graduate satisfaction, student satisfaction, employer satisfaction, employment rate, and graduation rate.
 

Locks pegged with closing date

A tentative closing date is in place for the Soo Locks. This ahead of the stoppage of vessels due to ice. Jan. 15 is expected to be the last day the locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., will be operational. All vessels must be clear of the Welland Canal by Dec. 31.
