Cambrian College student services receive $74,000

The generosity of the Christmas season is in the air. This is following a generous infuse to Cambrian College… The Cambrian College Foundation had set a target of $10,000 for student services… but exceed 7 times over through eligible Giving Tuesday donations matched dollar-for-dollar, through Cambrian’s Gift Matching Program to just $74,000. Dan Lessard is with the College and explains where the money is going…

Lessard says that many remember the struggle of being a student, and now have a desire to give to those currently studying.
 

Sudbury’s Airport sporting new equipment, and new efficiencies.

Sudbury’s airport will spend more than $2 million on new airfield equipment. The announcement was made this week as officials promised a significant enhancement its overall operations. Among other purchases, they say a new multi-purpose, multi-season, tractor designed to improve an airport’s ability to manage snow and ice in the winter, and road and turf maintenance in the spring, summer and fall.
 

More need boxes, please – HIV committee

The AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area says more is needed when it comes to harm reduction in the community. Moreover, more needle drops boxes and more community spaces for active drug users are on the list. Safe disposal bins for used sharps are already in use in a number of Northern communities, including Sudbury and Timmins.
 

New fines coming into effect for distracted drivers

Newly imposed penalties for distracted driving will be going into effect… come the end of the year. Come January 1st fines for distracted driving under new provincial legislation are up to a maximum of $1,000 (currently $490) with three demerit points attached for any first offence. A second, $2,000 with six demerit points and a third… $3,000.
 

Jury recommends defibrillators for Police Cruisers

Meanwhile a jury has recommended that the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the province examine the feasibility of equipping all police vehicles with portable defibrillators. The recommendation came at the end of a two-day inquest into the Dec. 15, 2016 death of a Sault Ste. Marie man that had been arrested following an impaired driving complaint on Highway 17 near Bonfield shortly before 3 p.m. He later died of acute fentanyl and cocaine intoxication, combined with an underlying heart disease.
 

North Bay Police make $100k drug bust

North Bay Police have made the largest Fentanyl drug bust in the cities history. In short, more than $100,000 worth of drugs have been seized along with a number of weapons. Constable John Schultz says it all began in Toronto.

A 32 year old is facing a raft of charges, and is being held in custody.
