Accommodation tax coming for 2019

The city of North Bay could start charging an accommodation tax in 2019. That is, if proposed bylaw is approved by city council tonight. A 60/40 revenue-sharing agreement between the Tourism North Bay and the city for the funds is expected to go before council for approval. The tax is expected to generate an estimated $890,000 annually.
 

$1,000 reward for info leading to whereabouts of missing man

$1,000 is now up for grabs…. for information leading to the whereabouts of a missing man. Branden Bodson-Gratton has been gone since early December. The last tip was a possible sighting from a Vale employee who spotted a man walking on the train tracks in the area near Elm Street and the Lasalle extension.
25-year-old Branden is described as being 5’10’’ tall, weighing around 155 lbs. with short brown hair and hazel eyes.

 

Pop up Kitchen coming set to fill tummies and warm hearts

Several Timmins Students are looking to warm some hearts and fill some tummies today. Students at R. Ross Beattie Public School are hosting a pop-up kitchen today from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, on Third Avenue. The school says homemade vegetable soup and hot chocolate is being served to support those in need, while creating student engagement.
 

Water main break slows traffic

A giant hole in the road slowed some traffic yesterday, during the drive home for some in Sault Ste. Marie. It was dug into North Street after the city went looking for the cause of a watermain break. Traffic was closed to north bound drivers for a time time.  Roughly 10 costumers were affected in total by the water disruption.
 

Dragon Boat 2019 slated to help NEO kids foundation

Looking into the warmer weather of 2019… the Sudbury Dragon Boat Festival is already preparing for it’s 20th anniversary. The event has had tremendous success over the years and has raised more than $1.7 million for nine local charities. In a press conference this week, it was announced that next year’s event, in July, will be supporting the NEO Kids Foundation’s capital campaign.
 

North Bay residents warned of scam

North Bay fire and emergency took to social media yesterday warning residents of a scam. They say someone is attempting to scare homeowners into getting their smoke or carbon monoxide alarm tested, and that their services are available for a cost. While it is important to check both smoke and C0 Detectors monthly, authorities say this is a scam and to simply hang up.
