Budget for Sudbury Police increasing for 2019?

Sudbury Police will ask for more money in 2019 for front line officers. This week, Police chief Paul Pedersen presented the proposed police budget for next year to the Sudbury Police Services Board which asks for more officers on the front lines. The total budget will work out to $59.9 million, a 3.8 per cent increase from 2018.
 

At least one injured seriously in morning accidents

One person is in critical condition following a Friday morning collision. It happened during rush hour on Municipal Road 55 in Whitefish. There is no word as how the accident happened, but it is noted among a number of accidents this morning in vehicles in the ditch on Municipal Road 55, 17, both east and west, and Highway 144.
 

Coach4Food clears 26,700 pounds of food.

With Christmas just four-days away, another successful year is being reported from a number of charities. Included in the listed is the annual Coach4Food program in the city of North Bay. Organizers say over 26,700 pounds of food was collected for the North Bay Food Bank. A total of 27 teams from three associations all participate.
 

“Pre-pay” to replace “Pay at the pump”?

A southern Ontario push could be fueled here in the North. It has to do with pre-paying for fuel. The Ontario Chiefs of Police are lobbying the province to create new legislation which would require the change from, paying at the pump, all to stop an increase in fuel theft. Here in the North, North Bay Police chief Shawn Devine has already spoken up saying that t he idea makes sense.
 

Another parking By-law lifted for Holiday times

Another parking by-law ban has been lifted. This time it’s in Timmins. City council says that during the holiday period, cars will not be ticketed or towed from parking on city streets over night, on Dec 25th Dec 26th or Jan 1st. The move is to discourage impaired driving. The by-law will be lifted annually.
 

Star back up in Sault Ste. Marie

A star is shining brightly once again in the Sault Ste. Marie area. Algoma Steel Inc.’s Christmas star is back up. The steelmaker, partnering with Millennium Crane Rentals, has resurrected the star, crafted in the 1980s by members of Algoma’s central trades group. Measuring 29 feet across. The company says that this year it’s returning to its roots, and it seemed only fitting to resurrect the tradition.
