Elliot Lake civic centre roof falls in

At least three people escaped unharmed yesterday, when a portion the civic centre roof in Elliot Lake, collapsed. It happened at around 6:30 p.m. Apparently there was a large cracking sound before a portion of the roof in the Auditorium collapsed. Preparations were underway for a dress rehearsal at the time. Emergency personnel along with Hydro and Union Gas were onsite in minutes. Tonight’s production is being relocated.
 

Sudbury tax levy increase set at 3.6%

The Greater Sudbury city budget has been finalized. The final number came in at $593 million dollars. The tax levy increase will be 3.6 percent. The increase was something of a disappointment as it was down to 3.3% Wednesday, and the goal, according to city council was to keep the increase under 3.5%
 

45 more jobs coming to Northern Ontario

More Jobs are coming to at least two communities in Northern Ontario, thanks to Home Depot. It’s all part of a wider initiative for the Province. 30 jobs are being added to the workforce in Sudbury, while 15 are being added in North Bay. The push will aim to see more than 2,400 jobs for the province.
 

Flights will continue despite possible strike action

Flights will continue to take off and land in Timmins, strike or no strike. This is according to the city’s head of personnel. Nineteen airport employees — all members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees Local 75 — will be in a legal strike position March 1. They have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2016.
 

Over $66.500 will “Spruce Up” the downtown core

A pilot project is underway in Sault Ste. Marie to breath new life into old infrastructure. Specifically, to transform downtown laneways. A new committee has been tasked with creating a plan on how to use over $66,500 from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario for a main street revitalization initiative. The hope is that improvements can be made to improve walkability and connectivity while creating new green spaces and a canvas for public art.
 

Parental involvement getting a boost

Class is in session for many schools in Northern Ontario today, but boosting parent involvement through innovative projects is being put into place in Greater Sudbury by the Rainbow District School Board. Implemented thanks to funding provided by the Ministry of Education’s Parent Engagement Office, ten Rainbow Schools will share a total of $9,450 in Parents Reaching Out Grants to support School Council initiatives to further parents/guardian’s engagement.
