$131,600 raised for the infant food bank

The Sudbury Infant Food Bank say after all donations, fundraising and pledges the 10th annual “All We Need for Christmas” fundraising campaign is the biggest in the group’s history. This year just over $131,600 worth of baby supplies, food and monetary donations were made for young families in need.
 

North Bay and Nipissing to receive $1.2 million to fight homelessness

North Bay and Nipissing are the latest to receive funding under a new homelessness strategy. $1.2 million will be coming over the next five years under the new federal strategy called Reaching Home. Sudbury will receive $4.2.
 

Vein finder purchased for Hospital

The Timmins and District Hospital has a new tool when it comes to drawing blood. A vein finder has been purchased device thanks to a donation from the Porcupine Kinsmen Club. The device, which uses a red light to highlight veins under the skin, was purchased at a cost of just over $8,300.
 

Soo Transit looking for improve evening service

Sault Ste. Marie is looking to improve Sunday evening bus service. Council has given the nod to staff to launch a request for proposal that could lead to an on-demand transit service pilot project. The system has been tested in other communities and has improved transit service, increased ridership in traditionally lower usage times and resulted in a more economical service.
 

Malfunction shuts down Timmins rink

A malfunction has shut down operations at a Timmins rink. The season for the rink at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex ended a few weeks early when the brine pump quit working on Sunday. As a result, operations at the Mac will remain open later in the season.
 

Telehealth a possible solution for “orphaned patients”

With doctor shortages across the Northern Ontario, a telemedicine service targeting “orphaned patients” – anyone without a family doctor – has begun operating in Iroquois Falls. Good Doctors have sites across Ontario, including one in Cochrane. The hope is that it will supply more medical assistance to those without a doctor while cutting down ER times.

The election could cost more next time around

The dust has barely settled after the fall municipal election, but the next one could cost more for residents. A choice will be given to have a paper ballot or to vote. It is expected to increase the cost of the election by $300,000.
