Freezing Rain coming for Northern Ontario

A Greater Sudbury resident is lucky to have emerged relatively unscathed from a kitchen fire. It happened at a residence in Sudbury near Ramsey Lake. When personnel entered the home they found significant smoke emanating from a pot and the resident unconscious on the couch. Woken by firefighters, the man was pulled from the smoky building and treated on the scene by paramedics.
 

Resident pulled from House Fire

Residents in Northern Ontario are being warned of freezing rain. Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for Sudbury, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. They say precipitation will begin as snow late this afternoon or evening, then change to ice pellets or freezing rain overnight.
 

Laughren appointed as the new chief

Tom Laughren is Timmins’ new fire chief. Appointed this week, Council passed third and final reading of a bylaw appointing the former Timmins mayor as the city’s new fire chief at this week’s meeting. Laughren is also a long-time volunteer firefighter in the community.
 

Construction concerns as festival approaches

A concern is growing as to whether construction will be complete in a timely manner in Sault Ste Marie. This is all as city crews begin work on Bay Street this summer as planned. This issue is that downtown business owners are also getting ready for Sault Ste. Marie’s first multi-day poutine festival crossing over Canada Day. The city is reducing Bay Street from four lanes to two lanes with bike lanes, a tree-lined boulevard and pedestrian walkways.
 

Firefighters put out shed fire

North Bay Firefighters were quick to stamp out a fire of a shed on Justin Street yesterday afternoon. The call came in around 5:30 p.m. Firefighters say the homeowner was alerted of the fire by a neighbour, then the homeowner called 9-1-1. No one was injured in the fire but some outdoor equipment including a snowblower were damaged.
 

HSN appoints new VP, Academic and Research Impact

Health Sciences North (HSN) and it’s Research Institute (HSNRI) have appointed Vice-President, Academic and Research Impact. Effective May 1st, Dr Greg Ross will take the seat. Dr Ross is the current working for the Aerospace Industrial Research Chair in Environment and Health Surveillance and is a Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience in the Division of Medical Sciences at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
