Lapointe appointed Executive Director of Community Living

Community Living Greater Sudbury has a new lead. Viviane Lapointe. Lapointe, a former senior executive with Health Sciences North is the new executive director and brings 25 years of senior level management to the table. Community living says that her experience in community engagement and her knowledge of the government sector made her the right candidate for the position.
 

Ridesharing service picking up support in North Bay

Ridesharing service Uride is gaining speed in North Bay. The company posted on social media that it has received “an overwhelming number of requests” to offer service in the gateway city and is now recruiting drivers in the city. The company was founded two years ago in Thunder Bay and is now operating in Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Chatham-Kent.
 

Melt sparking more flood warnings

The spring melt in Timmins has sparked warning. The Flood Advisory Committee says there may be a water safety risk around Porcupine Lake, the Mattagami River, Town Creek, Porcupine River and Crawford Creek. While flooding is not anticipated at this time, it is still early, and conditions are subject to change. The committee said it will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis, particularly with the 15 to 25 mm of rainfall that was expected Monday combined with 25 to 50 mm expected overnight into this morning.
 

Health Appointments being rescheduled

Health appointments are being cancelled today by Algoma Public Health. This is after a ransomware attack, Friday, which in turn blocked access to the servers. While no personal information or client information was taken, the APH continues to get services back online. APH says that the IT department was able to quickly disconnect the servers from the internet on Friday. They have apologized for the inconvenience.
 

KED finds temporary housing

The ongoing Kingsway Entertainment District discussion has a new talking point for Sudburians. This is after developer Dario Zulich has conditionally agreed to buy the Chateau Guay Motel as a temporary home for Gateway Casinos. The KED has been locked in a legal dispute at the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal. While provincial legislation says a decision must be made on the appeal within a year, the planning laws are untested in court. An upper court will rule April 24-25.
 

DNSSAB gets funding infuse

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board or DNSSAB will receive nearly $2.7 million in funding from the province this year. The funding will be used to aid programs designed to tackle homelessness and provide affordable housing. The province will provide the board with approximately $216,000 through Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario — a program which provides funding to help build, and increase access to, affordable housing — and $1.68 million for the Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative.
