Sudbury water and sewer rates will drop to 4.8%

Sudburians will now pay less for water than expected. This is after city council has eliminated the 7.8 per cent annual hikes in water and sewer rates and approving a longer term plan to see increases instead of 4.8 per cent each year until 2039. The revenues would be enough to pay for capital and other expenses.
While maintaining the 7.8 per cent hike each year would mean sustainability would only take about 10 years, spreading them out over a longer period of time eases the amount. At 4.8 per cent, the average annual water bill would rise from $1,277 today to $2,047 in 2039.

M.S. Norgoma shipped out the Bondar Marina

The M.S. Norgoma has been shipped out the Bondar Marina. It reportedly went through the American locks to its new temporary docking location west of Algoma Steel early yesterday. Council had determined that the ship was an eyesore in the downtown core and that attempts by the board to spruce it up and encourage tourism had not been fruitful.

Sudbury runs a 2.1 million deficit

The numbers are in, and the city of Sudbury is showing a deficit of $2.1 million dollars for 2018. While some departments spent way less than expected, others ran deep into the red. The city says that because they cannot run a deficit, the shortfall will be made up using reserve funds.
The biggest deficit was in linear infrastructure (roads, sewer, etc.), which went over budget by $1.42 million. Among them, winter maintenance costs were $2.39 million higher than budgeted, an amount offset by road summer maintenance, which was $740,000 under budget, as well as street lighting ($110,00 under) and public works ($120,000 under).
