Summer Enrollment up at Cambrian College

Cambrian College in Greater Sudbury continues to grow in numbers, despite the fact that its summer. Summer enrollment is various programs are taking off and according to Dan Lessard from Cambrian… it’s only the start.

Lessard says enrolment is up at Colleges across Ontario.
 

Collision sends one to hospital

A collision between a fuel tanker and a passenger vehicle has sent one person to the hospital this morning. North Bay fire crews responded to a motor vehicle collision just after 3 a.m. at Christine Lane and Highway 17 West. Firefighters were able to stabilize and removed the driver from the passenger vehicle.  The driver was taken by ambulance to North Bay Regional Health Centre. No further details were released.
 

Tourism booth in Iroquis Falls closes

The tourist information booth serving  Iroquois Falls is closed. Mayor Pat Britton says over the past three years, half of the people stopping at the booth on Highway 11 just outside Porquis have only stopped to use the washroom.  Of the rest, only about a quarter asked for maps or directions. It’s been open since 1975. With no plan to revive the service, the next consideration is the future of the building itself.
 

Suspects sought in theft, collision

Sudbury OPP is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying suspects in relation to a theft of vehicle and failure to remain at the scene of a collision.  This is after being called to HW 144 near Geneva Lake road north of the town of Cartier and found a brown Ford F250 pickup truck on its roof. There was significant damage. It’s believed the truck was stolen.   The investigation revealed that the pickup truck was stolen from a residence on Lorne Street in Cartier. Anyone having information about the identity of the suspect driver is asked to contact Crime Stoppers. The value of the stolen property is estimated to be approximately $25,000.
 

Downed Hydro wire blamed for a house fire

A downed hydro wire is being blamed for a house fire on Highway 11 North, just north of North Bay. The call went out at around 3:45 p.m. Thick smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the home. The tree came down on some hydro lines, the hydro lines came in contact with the roof, started a fire which started in the roof and then spread into the house.  Thankfully there were no injuries… the damage was significant. The roof was on fire when emergency services arrived, but they had to wait for North Bay Hydro to isolate power to the home before crews could get in to knock down the fire. The homeowners were inside the residence when the fire started, but everyone managed to get out safely.   Firefighters remained on scene past 5 p.m. to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
 

Timmins Senior in Hospital following a collision

A local Timmins Senior is Hospital after being struck by a vehicle. The single-vehicle collision took place around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Pine Street and Algonquin Boulevard. The vehicle, a black, three-quarter-ton Ford Super Duty, was driven by a female Timmins resident who remained at the scene.  The man was in his 70’s.

Rotary Parade on for this weekend

The final touches are being put on an event, slated to delight residents and cause slight headaches for Sault Ste. Marie drivers. The 98th Rotary Community Day Parade. It’s slated to happen this coming Saturday, Among other closures, Queen Street East will be closed from Elizabeth Street to Church Street.  This area will be used as a staging area for the parade and will be closed until 12 p.m.  In addition, the lower portion of Church Street north to Queen Street East will be closed from 9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.  The parade route will be on Queen Street East from Church Street to Gore Street. That section of roadway will be closed at 10:30 a.m. and will re-open around 1 p.m. upon the completion of the parade.   In order to keep the parade route free from obstructions, there will be no parking on Queen Street East from Church Street to Andrew Street starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. At 1 p.m. this temporary parking restriction will end and vehicles will be allowed to lawfully park in the area.  Any vehicle found on the parade route after 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning will be towed from the area at the owner’s expense.
