Another hot one for residents today

Significant heat and humidity will arrive today in North Bay and Greater Sudbury. Daytime temperatures will knock on 30’s door with afternoon humidex values in the upper thirties are expected today and again on Saturday. A weak cold front Saturday evening will bring a cooler and less humid air mass to the region.  Little relief is expected tonight as temperatures will only fall to near 18 with humidex values remaining in the upper twenties. Extreme heat affects everyone.
 

A new forest fire registered in the North East

There is one new active fire in the Northeast Region. Sault Ste. Marie 4 is located north of Algoma Headwaters Provincial Park, 1 km east of Logan Lake. It measures 0.6 hectares and is not yet under control. As of late yesterday, there were seven other active wildland fires in the region.
 

L.U. donors target of next scam in Sudbury Area

Some of Laurentian University’s donors have been the target of a scam. In the form of an email, it is a invoice and appears as though it was sent from the university’s Advancement Office. Thankfully no one has fallen for the alleged scam, and it is under investigation.
 

TDHA has a new board chair

The Timmins and District Hospital Board of Directors has a new board chair. Gaétan Malette was elected and replaces the previous director of 3-years, Maggie Matear. Gaétan comes with five years of experience as a board member 40 years’ worth of organizational and community development experience.
At the Annual General Meeting held on June 18, 2019, as the Chair of the Timmins and District Hospital Board of Directors.
 

Legal issues over Norgoma continue in Sault

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has filed a motion seeking an order to reconvey ownership of the MS Norgoma back to the city. Moreover, they have filed an application seeking a court order to reconvene the M.S. Norgoma and order its board of directors to pay for costs associated with moving the vessel, temporarily docking it and dealing with contaminated water in its hull.
The legal action is just another step in a lengthy disagreement between the board and the city over the future and usefulness of the vessel.
 

Police investigate unrelated thefts

Two unrelated thefts are under investigation in North Bay. They both happened on Main Street this week. Constable John Schultz spoke to us and says…

The first suspect is described as an older Caucasian man, tall with white hair, and wearing a red T-shirt.  The second suspect is described as female, with her hair in a bun, wearing a white shirt and black pants.   Police are advising members of the public to call their financial institution and cancel any credit or debit cards if their wallet is stolen or lost, to list the contents of the wallet, and report the theft to police.
