HSN issues a reminder about wearing masks

HSN in Greater Sudbury is reminding all patients and visitors they must wear a mask when coming to the hospital. While handmade masks are acceptable, the hospital says its an added step to reduce the spread of germs and protect vulnerable patients.
 

Heat warning expected to remain through the weekend

The heat warning in effect for some parts of Northern Eastern Ontario is expected to remain throughout the weekend. And with that comes the raised the fire rating ranging from Moderate in Timmins, to Extreme in Greater Sudbury. Anyone thinking of having a campfire should check with municipalities first.

There were four new fires confirmed by the late afternoon of July 2. Among them, Sudbury 28 is 1.5 hectares and not under control at this time. The fire is located near Millerd Lake. Sudbury 27 is 1.1 hectares and not under control at this time. The fire is located within Wikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island. North Bay 16 is 0.4 of a hectare and not under control at this time. This fire is located north of Rabbit Lake.
 

SportsPlex in Timmins going through deck replacement

The Sportsplex pool deck in Timmins is being replaced. Being done prior to reopening, city council made the decision during this week’s meeting. The current deck is 17-year into a 20-year lifespan.
 

PUC says 2019 report notes significant revenue growth

The PUC in Sault Ste. Marie PUC Group provided its 2019 sustainability report to council last week, noting significant revenue growth and a massive capital infrastructure investment. This is all to keep the lights and water running to customer satisfaction, saying they recorded its highest earnings in the history of the company. $150 million. Some of that is being reinvested into communities it serves.
 

Sudbury OPP finds two runaway pups

A Sudbury OPP officer filling his vehicle at a Lively gas station was in the right place at the right time to make an unexpected capture. This is of two Shih Tzus had apparently escaped Pet Save in Lively. The shelter says they’re grateful to get the dogs back, and the two are now up for adoption.
 

LU – Homeless Population on the rise

Greater Sudbury’s homeless population is on the rise. That is according the numbers, published this week by researchers at Laurentian University. As many as 3,000 people are said to be in need of stable lodging and since the pandemic began, it’s only become more difficult to access basic services, like food and medicine.

North Bay city council awards contract for water and sewer services along Pinewood Park

North Bay city council has awarded a $1.7 million contract to extend water and sewer services along Pinewood Park Drive. The project which includes the addition of 280 metres of sanitary sewer and 200 metres of water main will service the casino project and any future developments. It’s all said to be part of the larger construction project for the casino.
 

Sault Ste Marie Museum reopens next week

The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is set to re-open next week. Beginning on Tuesday, July 7, the Museum will be open five days a week. Safety protocols will be in place – such as booking appointments and using a facemask.
