Fire destroys a Windy Lake location

An early morning fire yesterday at a remote location on Windy Lake in Greater Sudbury has destroyed a camp. Fire crews from Levack, Dowling, Chelmsford and downtown responded to the call for help, called in at around 6:45 a.m. That said, by the time crews arrived, the property had been destroyed. Firefighters performed exposure protection on surrounding buildings and nearby bush to keep the fire contained. No damage estimate was provided.
 

Driver charged following collision

A driver has been charged, but no injuries were reported following a two-vehicle collision in North Bay. It happened at the corner of O’Brien and Foster streets shortly before 10 a.m. yesterday. North Bay police, fire and ambulance personnel all responded to the crash. Traffic was held up traffic for a time near the North Bay bypass. Tow trucks were required to remove vehicles from the scene.
 

Timmins Mayor George Pirie expected to make a full recovery

Timmins Mayor George Pirie is expected to make a “full recovery”. This is following an incident several weeks ago where the mayor “suffered what is being called a medical issue.”. In a media release sent yesterday afternoon, city officials indicated Pirie was hospitalized for a short while and then was released shortly after to continue his recovery at home.
 

Rainbow board to discuss school reopening

The Rainbow District School Board says they will Livestream their Strategic Planning Committee meeting, taking place tonight. The agenda includes a presentation on the reopening of Rainbow board schools. The Livestream link will be on the board website at rainbowschools.ca. The meeting starts at 5 pm.
 

Accommodation tax pulls in nearly $1 million

North Bay’s accommodation tax has pulled in nearly $1 million within the past year alone. A staff report to North Bay council, expected to be discussed tonight will show that the just over $982,000 in its inaugural year, exceeding an initial projection. It adds a four per cent rate, before HST, to the total cost of a room booked in North Bay.
 

Former city councillor passes away

A former North Bay city councillor has died. Maureen Boldt has passed away at North Bay Regional Hospital following a long battle with an illness. Born in Ottawa she moved to Sturgeon Falls and attend both Widdifield Secondary and Canadore College. She eventually earning an Ontario Teachers Certificate at Nipissing University and went on to serve on City Counsellor for multiple terms. Maureen Boldt was 61.

Mattawa Bridge to be completed in November

Mattawa residents will have to put up with a few more months of alternating one-lane traffic on the township’s bridge but the end is in sight. The work is all to repair and upgrade the essential infrastructure damaged done by 2019’s spring flood. A substantial completion date has been set November 13th.
