105 cases of COVID-19 confirmed for Monday, August 24th in Ontario
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 105 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today. The province’s public health agency has also reported one new death – an individual between 60 and 79 years old.
1-new case of COVID-19 in the Greater Sudbury area
Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting a new COVID-19 case. The new case affects a man in his 40s in the Sudbury District. His exposure to the virus is unknown, as he had not been travelling, and has had no contact with a known case. The man is self-isolating.
Sudbury going back to one bag of Garbage on September 14th
Starting September 14th, and the weekly residential garbage bag limit will return to one bag per household in Greater Sudbury. The City of Greater Sudbury temporarily increased the limit to four bags on March 27 to assist residents during the provincial state of emergency.
Neither Nipissing nor Canadore suspending programs
Neither Canadore College nor Nipissing University say they have plans to suspend admissions for any year, for any program. This is after Laurentian University in Sudbury would not accept students in 17 programs this year, including anthropology and theatre, many of which are in French.
Family dog rescued in a house fire
Sault Ste Marie firefighters have been thanked after rescuing the family dog. This is after being called to a house fire in the 100-block of McFadden Ave., early Sunday afternoon. The call came in around the lunch hour… thankfully there were no injuries.
School boards release back to school guidelines
The Near North board has released back-to-school guidelines. While field trips, sports, extracurricular activities are being suspended… Students at the Near North District School Board will return to classes Sept. 8 under the “conventional model”. A 36-page document has been published, aimed at meeting the Ministry of Education’s current parameters.
Meanwhile, English public schools in the Timmins area says some will be heading back to school, a little earlier than some. Starting Thursday, September 3rd, those with the last name from A to H will be hitting the books. Sir names with A to P will then follow on September 4th with remaining students back on the 8th. All students should be pre-registered.
Also, Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon says a staggard start will greet students this fall. Most students will be returning to school gradually from Tuesday, Sept. 8 to Friday, Sept. 11. The goal is to allow for the implementation of enhanced health and safety protocols and new routines. The gradual return schedule of each school will be communicated to parents through the Parents’ Portal by no later than Aug. 28.
