North Bay Driver blows past stopped school bus

North Bay Police have issued their first ticket for the new school year for passing a stopped school bus. While they haven’t said where, police are reminding drivers are back in school, and drivers are reminded to come to a full stop for a school bus with the stop arm extended. Fines for speeding are doubled in school zones.
 

Sudbury Health Unit declares the 100th case of COVID-19

Public Health Sudbury and Districts have reported its 100th case of COVID-19. The announcement came yesterday afternoon. Case No. 100 is in the Manitoulin district and reported as travel related. The person is self-isolating.

The Timmins Fire department is getting a new truck

Timmins Fire Department will soon have a new rescue/pumper truck in its fleet of vehicles. The truck will replace an aging unit from the 1990s. Council approved the purchase of the truck at a cost of $400k, the lowest compliant tender.

The Ontario’s Local Planning Appeals Tribunal will reconvene today and tomorrow. It’s all over the matter of the Kingsway Entertainment District. Several groups are fighting to stop the casino from being built on the site, as well as city council’s decision to move the arena from downtown Sudbury to the Kingsway.

The Timmins Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing person. They’re looking to check on well-being of 33-year-old Rachel Paul-Martin. She was last seen on Monday, Sept. 14th.
 

A number of LU programs to be reinstated

Admission to a number of suspended Laurentian University programs could soon be reinstated. This is following a vote this week by the university’s senate. Last month, the Sudbury university announced it was putting admission to 17 programs on hold, citing low enrolment. The senate voted in favour of reinstating admissions to the programs, which range from archeology to geography to modern languages and music.
