Suspended programs at LU will remain suspended

New admissions to the 17 programs at Laurentian University will remain suspended. Faculty had attempted to have the decision to suspend admission, reversed. The subcommittee said suspension on new admissions will continue until it receives and considers responses from the affected units or departments on how to ensure the quality of those programs.

Laurentian Ski Hill says they’re ready for the coming season

The Laurentian ski hill says that with new COVID-19 measures in place, it will be ready to welcome thousands of seasoned and novice skiers to the hill this coming season. Season passes for the coming season go on sale Wednesday.
 

TV crew demo buildings in Timmins area

Demolition and production crews from the TV series “Salvage Kings” were in South Porcupine this week. They were tearing down the former Central Tavern on Bruce Avenue. Before tearing down buildings, their salvage crew go inside and recover any historic artifacts that may have been left behind. Also slated for demolition is the former Tisdale public works shop on Evans Street, along with a derelict residential property on Fourth Avenue in Schumacher.
 

Bear sighting in Sault Ste Marie

Another bear sighting has been made in Sault Ste Marie. It happened at a residence on Poplar Avenue which runs from behind the YMCA, across MacDonald Avenue, ending at Summit Avenue. This bear was seen strolling through the backyard on lower Poplar Avenue. It was last seen headed towards Bellevue Avenue and Pim Street but is believed to have moved off.
 

Sudbury receives $100k to improve food security

Greater Sudbury has received nearly $100,000 from the federal government to improve food security in the community. The announcement came from Nickel Belt MP Marc Serre yesterday. The funds were distributed between four organizations to support breakfast programs and to save unsold produce and fresh food among other food security initiatives.
 

Watch for bouys in Lake Nipissing – MNRF

A Heads up to North Bay area boaters. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry along with Nipissing First Nation will be working together in Lake Nipissing over the next month. It’s all to conduct research and data on local fish populations. In total 58 nets will be set and retrieved during the survey. Fish will be sampled for length, weight, gender, maturity, and age.

Cory Robin fill ward 5 seat in Timmins

Timmins City council has filled an empty seat. Cory Robin has been appointed to war 5 to replace Noella Rinaldo. Rinaldo, one of four Ward 5 representatives, announced her resignation from council in August. Robin had come close to earning one of the four Ward 5 seats on election night in 2018, finishing just two votes behind Andrew Marks.
 

Manitoulin Lodge likely to lose 17 beds

Manitoulin Lodge likely to lose 17 beds as province mandates end to multi-bed wards. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to impact communities from around the globe. The Lodge is the only nursing home on Manitoulin that still has a ward system for some of its residents.
