One person tests positive at Sault Ste Marie YMCA

The YMCA of Sault Ste. Marie says that a staff member has tested positive for COVID-19. A notice to that end went out to members yesterday. According to the YMCA, the individual in question is currently isolating at home, following public health directives.
 

$122,000 coming to Sudbury Charities

The Sudbury Community Foundation says just over $122,000 will be going to support local charities. It is all part of a partnership between Community Foundations of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Red Cross. The funds stem from the federal government’s $350 million Emergency Community Support Fund, aimed at supporting charities during the pandemic.
 

11,000 new LED lights going up in Greater Sudbury

The City of Greater Sudbury will be replacing existing streetlights with LED lights. The goal is to reduce the municipality’s carbon footprint and creating savings. The project was approved as part of the 2020 Budget process at a cost of $5.6 million. Once complete, the 11,000 light project is expected to result in over $1 million in energy savings per year.
 

Mattawa man charged in spray-paint incident

A Mattawa man has been charged with 8-counts of mischief. This is after three vehicles, including a police cruiser, parked behind the OPP detachment were spray painted early Tuesday. The 49-year-old was arrested Wednesday at the North Bay OPP detachment.
 

Timmins Transit service is being expanded

Timmins Transit service levels are being enhanced to meet an increase in demand.
Currently running a Saturday service level, starting Tuesday the Howard/Brousseau will have bus service at 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. while the South Porcupine route will have bus service at 6. a.m., 7 a.m., and 8 a.m.
 

Greater Sudbury given jail time for distracted driving after license suspended

A Greater Sudbury man will spend the next 15 days in jail. He was handed the sentence this week, after a traffic stop for distracted driving due to cellphone use. Following an investigation, it was discovered had had lost his license for a year due to an impaired driving conviction.

Trout Lake Arena reopening next week

Powassan council has decided to open the Trout Lake arena, next week. The work to start putting the ice in the arena began yesterday. That said, Mayor Peter McIsaac and Coun. Markus Wand say there is still a possibility it could shut down again, due to the second wave of COVID-19.
 

Mining program continues to get fired up at Northern College

Northern College says despite the pandemic, they’re experiencing record enrolment growth in at leat one program. Mining. The school says enrolment in mining programs has grown by 50 per cent compared to this same time just one year ago in 2019.
