New cases of COIVD-19 announced by multiple health units.

Among new case counts of COVID-19 yesterday into today, Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting three new cases for the catchment area. Of the newly reported cases, one has been linked to travel, one with close contact with another confirmed case and one has no known link at this time. Despite the three new cases, Greater Sudbury’s number of active cases dropped by one, from 10 to nine on Tuesday as four cases were declared resolved.
Meanwhile the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reported one new case of COVID-19 yesterday. The case involves a person between 20 and 39 years of age in Parry Sound District who was exposed through community spread. The person is isolating at home.
Elsewhere, the Timiskaming Health Unit is reporting its 44th COVID-19 case. It’s a person in the northern part of the district, which is the Kirkland Lake area. And the Algoma Public Health is reporting a new case of COVID-19. The health unit says the exposure category is unknown, and the individual who was tested Monday is now self-isolating.
 

HSN aiming for a balanced budget by end of fiscal year

Regardless of the pandemic pressures, HSN in Greater Sudbury is working towards a balanced budget for the end of the fiscal year. That said, HSN has the highest occupancy level of any hospital in Ontario right now or 109% capacity. That optimistic outlook was presented last week by hospital CEO and president Dominic Giroux.
 

Nip-U creates a new awards for Indigenous students

Nipissing University has created new student awards for its Indigenous students. Made possible in partnership with CIBC, The President’s Indigenous Achievement Awards will provide up to eight students with bursaries of up to $5,000 in financial support each year to Indigenous students demonstrating high academic achievement in disciplines related to Science, Technology, Environmental Science, Math and Indigenous Studies.
 

Call for service brings Greater Sudbury Fire to Lively Farm

Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a call for service at a farm in Lively Tuesday evening. The incident, said to be minor, was caused due to contractors working on a barn. Thankfully there were no active flames and some smoke on the roof which was isolated.
 

Skiing declared “Not an essential service”

Despite their best efforts, the Laurentian Ski Hill and other Ontario ski resorts, including Antoine Mountain in Mattawa, have not been deemed an essential service by the provincial government. The “Save Our Skiing” campaign run by the Ontario Snow Resorts Association (OSRA), which saw over 2,500 people write to their local MPP’s in an effort to get skiing deemed an essential service. That means skiing, if not already going will have to wait until the end of the lockdown.
 

Signiant snow possible for a number of areas, including Timmins

Snow will continue today in Timmins. It may transition to rain this evening before changing back to snow on Thursday. Total snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected by Thursday afternoon. Locally higher amounts of 15 cm will be possible in areas north and west of Timmins.  Driving conditions will continue to deteriorate. Motorists should consider changing travel plans accordingly.
