Two Sault Ste Schools sharing $6.3 million from the Province

Algoma University and Sault College is sharing $6.3 million from the Province. It’s all to address the financial impacts of COVID-19 as they begin to look to move back to on-campus learning. It’s all part of the province’s $106.4 million allocation to the post-secondary sector to help with recovery efforts experienced over the past year.
 

North Bay Police continue to look into body cameras

North Bay Police are one step closer to using body cameras. Details are expected before the end of this month according to Police Chief Scott Todd. He says they are in the midst of working through the digital management evidence portion of what is necessary to commence the pilot project.
 

New funding coming to support new beds at LTC homes

A new 96-bed long-term care bed facility is going to be built in Trout Creek. It is one of 80 across the province that will benefit from a $933-million provincial investment from the Province of Ontario. The exact amount of funding the Trout Creek long-term care home will receive has yet to be determined.
 

Porcupine Health Workers can now get vaccinated

The Porcupine Health Unit says Health care workers are the next group to receive a vaccine. The announcement was made this week. Those who wish to can register online. A corresponding email will then let registrants know of the next clinic.
 

Rainbow board and OSSTF District 3 reach a tentative deal

The Rainbow District School Board has reached a tentative agreement with the federation representing Professional Student Services Personnel. For the OSSTF District 3 in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island, it covers a number of groups including psychometrists, psychologists, speech and language pathologists, social workers, and indigenous support workers. If ratified, will be in effect from Sept. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2022.
 

Land taken off the market by the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority

The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority has decided to hold off on selling a portion of Flintstone Park in the city of Timmins north end. The MRCA, which owns Flintstone Park, was looking to sell 10 per cent of the property, presented as two lots, for residential development. Upon learning of the planned sale, residents had launched a petition expressing their concern over the reduction of greenspace in the area.
