Ontario records 2nd highest case count thus far

Ontario is recording the 2nd daily case count of COVID-19. 4,227 new cases of the novel coronavirus were added today. A notable increase from 3,295 reported Thursday. Among cases of COVID-19 today, Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting 37 new cases of COVID-19, along with 57 recoveries. 16 cases have tested positive for variants of concern.
 

No injures in a major house fire in West Ferris

Thankfully no one was injured in a fire Thursday in West Ferris. Firefighters received a call for a structure fire at approximately 8:16 p.m. at a home on Campbell Avenue, between Gertrude Street W. and MacDonald Avenue W. Personnel say residents were cooking maple syrup at the time and that the issue may have been with the regulator on the propane tank. The damages are estimated to be between $80,000 and $100,000.
 

No more overdue fines, come summer, says library

The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library is ending fines for overdue material. The thought is that fines its not so much passing as message, as much as they hurt disadvantaged groups with limited incomes. The fines-free policy will start late in the summer, on Aug. 31, the same day the library marks its 125th anniversary. A policy many say is overdue.
 

Two outbreaks declared over at HSN

Health Sciences North says the COVID-19 an outbreak has been declared over. It was on the sixth floor of the Ramsey Lake Health Centre’s north tower. Thankfully the outbreak remained contained and there was no evidence of further transmission among staff or patients. Meanwhile, an outbreak on the 7B unit of HSN’s north tower, originally declared on March 16, was declared over this week. A total of four staff and four patients were impacted by the outbreak.
 

Laurentian will receive news of next moves, Monday

Faculty at Laurentian University will find out Monday, on their jobs once the post secondary school is re-structured. Termination notices will be sent out ahead of a meeting on their new tentative collective agreement the following day. The last faculty contract expired July 1st, 2020 before the institution declared itself insolvent. The ratification vote for faculty takes place Tuesday, April 13.
 

Drivers reminded to STOP for the school bus

Drivers are being reminded to stop for the school bus. Last month, North Bay Police say that say that in all five vehicle owners and one driver have been charged with failure to stop for a school bus with flashing lights during a targeted traffic enforcement campaign.
