Early morning fire in Greater Sudbury tied to arson

An early morning fire yesterday, near Greater Sudbury’ court house and jail has now been tied to arson.  The fire damaged at home of the Elizabeth Fry society.  The Elm Street fire remains under investigation. Damages have been pegged at $150k, but there were, thankfully, no injuries.
 

35-charged with the breach of the stay at home order

OPP in Kirkland Lake have charged 35 people in three separate incidents for violating emergency orders. In one incident, 23 people attending a house party on Harding Avenue.  In another incident, eight people attending an anti-lockdown rally at Kinross Pond, while four more people were charged May 8th, when police conducted a traffic stop on Highway 112 in Otto Township.

 

Residents in Timmins and Greater Sudbury reminded to be bear -wise

Residents in Timmins and Greater Sudbury are being reminded to be bear-wise. This is after a number of sightings in the North End of Timmins and Porcupine. Sightings have been made on Pine north, Hemlock, Tamarac and in Mountjoy township.  Meanwhile, one man spotted a mother bear and her cubs on video in New Sudbury. Police remind residents not to panic, and that a call to police is only needed if there is a threat to public safety.

 

New cases of COVID-19 announced in the North East

Among Case counts of COVID-19 yesterday,  Public Health Sudbury and Districts announced 6 new cases of COVID-19 and 7 recoveries. The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reported three new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday and six resolved. Six new COVID-19 cases and six recoveries are being reported today by the Porcupine Health Unit.  While three more Algoma District residents have tested positive for COVID-19, two from Sault Ste. Marie and area and one from Elliot Lake and area. All caught the virus from close contact and are self-isolating.

 

LU planning for in-person learning this fall

Laurentian University is planning a return to in-person learning this fall. The school made the announcement yesterday. The Post Secondary school says that courses will also be offered online, and that they are ready to make changes as needed.

 

Neighbourhood watch program being encouraged

The North Bay Police are encouraging residents and business owners to re-visit the Neighbourhood Watch program.  While it’s not a city program, nor police one… but instead a community one… Police indicate it results in a decrease of crime while bringing the neighbourhood closer together.  City Police are providing information on their website on how to get started.
