Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger has a new chief of staff

Mayor Brian Bigger’s office has announced a new chief of staff. This is after Melissa Zanette, who has been with the Mayor since his election announced back in May that she would be moving on. Her replacement is will be Hugh Kruzel. From Sudbury. He holds various degrees, including one from Laurentian University (1983). He has also worked for the Canadian Armed Forces, with children who have special needs, for both the City of Nepean and the City of Ottawa.
 

Giroux appointed for another 5-year term

Dominic Giroux, president and CEO of Health Sciences North and Health Sciences North Research Institute, shown in this file photo, has been appointed for another five-year term. It happened yesterday during the annual general meeting held virtually. Giroux joined HSN four years ago and along with a number of items was tasked with finding more beds and a second MRI. Giroux, says the plan moving forward is to “provide over the next decade more space for NEO Kids, for mental health, and for in-patient beds.”
 

Three new fires confirmed in the North East

Three new fires have been confirmed in the Northeast region yesterday. Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services says, none of them yet under control Sudbury 45 is 0.1 of a hectare, north of Burwash. North Bay 6 is 0.1 of a hectare is near Lake Temagami, while North Bay 7 is 0.6 of a hectare south of Lake Nipissing. Currently, there are four other active fires across the region, of these, two are not yet under control.
 

School board approve 2021-2022 budgets

District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) Board of Trustees has approved the coming year school budget. During the regular board meeting this week, the Board of Trustees passed a compliant budget in the amount of just over $137.5 million dollars. ($137,541,051). The budget includes a deficit of just over $1.1 million ($1,126,108). The Ministry of Education allows boards to incur a deficit of up to 2 percent as the pandemic continues to impact school operations.
Meanwhile,
Algoma District School Board trustees approved next year’s school budget at $169.2-million dollars. The English public board drew $271,061 from its accumulated surplus to balance the budget.
 

St. Joseph School in South Porcupine gets tender for new spaces

New child care spaces are opening in South Porcupine. The Ministry of Education has given approval for the Northeastern Catholic District School Board (NCDSB) to tender an addition to St. Joseph School to allow for a child care centre. It will open up 49 new licensed child care spaces and include three new child care rooms. It’s been more than three years since the project was announced in January 2018.
 

Those with trailers need to roll them off their Barber’s Bay Property

Those in the Timmins area with Trailers at Barber’s Bay are being given until the end of next month to move them off their lots. Following complaints from neighbours, the City of Timmins is enforcing a ten-year-old section of the zoning bylaw, limiting the number of dwellings to one. Evidently, when an RV camper trailer is put up on-site, it becomes a second dwelling. Enforcement will also begin at other lake areas of the city.
