Laurentian University projects benefiting from grant funding

The Province of Ontario is aiding researchers from Laurentian University through grants. Three projects in total will share just over $1.2 million ($1,246,775). The projects include a Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health, a Decolonization Film Project, and a virtual Learning Strategy.

NBPS district reports 6-new cases of COVID-19

The North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit reported six new COVID-19 cases yesterday. That said, the Health Unit also says 72 percent of adults have received one dose of vaccine, and 16 percent are fully vaccinated. The Health Unit is holding a vaccination clinic for inmates at the North Bay Jail on Friday to try and synch an outbreak.
 

Timmins Airport Runway rehab project completed

Victor M. Power Airport in Timmins can now host larger, heavier aircraft, thanks to the completion of a $9.5-million runway rehab project. The job involved the repaving of both the main 6,000-foot runway and the secondary 4,900-foot runway, as well as two taxiways, the equivalent of about 40 kilometres of roadway. It was paid for, in part through the city, and Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program.
 

HSCDSB balances the budget and approves 2021-22 spending plan

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board will have a balanced budget for the coming year. To get there, they will draw more than $600,000 from its reserves. Trustees approved the $80.1 ($80,112,721) financial plan during an online meeting on Wednesday evening.
 

The University of Sudbury announces new director: Serge Milville

The University of Sudbury has a new director. Serge Miville will take over from Father John Meehan, who is leaving to become director of the Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History at Trinity College, at the University of Toronto. He says the goal now is to leverage the school’s resources to ensure options to study in French, and that academic credentials are recognized and transferable.

The town of Mattawa is looking for input on the 2021 budget. To that end, a special public meeting is scheduled for Monday at 6 p. m. Sault College has been the target of an attempted cyber-attack. The school says they have suspended certain information technology services to protect the network. While few details have been released, the school says they are working diligently to address this issue, and they will provide further information as it is necessary.
 

Two day blitz inspection announced for Timmins businesses

Timmins businesses are getting a two-day inspection blitz. A Multi-Ministry Education and Enforcement Team will be conducting the work to ensure businesses have proper measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among employees, consumers and the general public. According to the Porcupine Health Unit, the two-day blitz to “assist with an education and enforcement campaign targeting businesses in the city”
