Building numbers in 2020 top $332 for Greater Sudbury

Even with the Pandemic, Sudbury building permits climbed to an impressive $322.4 Million in 2020. That’s according to Mayor Brian Bigger in a release this week. That’s up 15.4 percent over 2019. A total of 407 planning applications were received in 2020, including rezonings, site plans, Official Plan amendments, minor variances, consents, pre-consultations and applications for draft plans of subdivision/condominium.
 

Police seeking missing man: 39-year old Jamie Fleury

Greater Sudbury Police officers are continuing their search for a missing man. 39-year-old Jamie Fleury. He hasn’t been seen since July 5th. It’s possible he may be injured.
Fleury, 39, is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and bald. Anyone with information about where Fleury is asked to call the police at 705-675-9171.
 

South River making a bid for Northern Ontario Rail

As the Ford government studies the return of passenger rail service to Northern Ontario, South River is lobbying to become one of the 13 potential stops. Even though passenger train service in the North ended in 2012, the South River building hasn’t served as a train station since the 1990s. The municipality is applying for a $190,000 grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) to examine the structural integrity of the building and to develop an architectural design.
 

Kirkland Lake OPP makes a theft arrest

Kirkland Lake OPP arrested a 23-year old woman this week, following an alleged theft. It was from a business located on McChesney Avenue in the Town of Kirkland Lake. While the details have not been released, the accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in September.
 

Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah the target of Vandalism… again

Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah has been the target of Vandalism. The investigation is continuing, but those with the Museum say it hasn’t been the first time. Rocks big enough to cause significant damage were apparently thrown at the buildings, breaking all the Plexiglas recently installed in wake of the windows being damaged two weeks ago.
 

Soo fire services respond to smoke at a residence at John and Cathcart streets

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a call for service in the area of John Street and Cathcart Street yesterday, shortly before 1:30 p.m. Light smoke was reported, but no visible flames could be seen. The building in question appears to have sustained minor damage as a result of the fire. It is unknown if any injuries were reported.

Sudbury city council looking at changing golf course to swimming hole

The city of Greater Sudbury is now looking at a potential swimming hole in Lively. Residents were disappointed to lose a favourite swimming hole when the municipality sold Meatbird Lake Park back to Vale. The city is now being asked to purchase the Sixth Avenue Golf course in Lively. The course has been closed for a while and is available for $2 million. The hope is that the property would be spruced up, made accessibly and that a swimming hole would be added where one of the ponds is now.
 

Timmins Police seeking missing teen: 13-year old Haden Portugie

Timmins Police Service is looking for a missing teen. 13-year old Hayden Portugie.
He is described as:
• a Caucasian male person
• Height: 5’6” tall
• Weight: approximately 160 lbs
• Build: medium
• brown messy hair
• brown eyes
He was last seen wearing grey pants, an orange and grey Zoo York sweatshirt, a black hat with a leaf emblem on the front, black and red shoes, and carrying a black duffle bag.
 

Road painting this week in Sault St Marie

The city of Sault Ste Marie is thanking motorists in advance for their patience this morning. Roadway painting began yesterday resulting in some traffic delays. Although the paint used is water-based, it is designed to be safe for employees and the environment, and durable enough to withstand adverse weather conditions.
