Health Unit working to track down a possible COVID-19 exposure

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is working to track down a possible COVID-19 exposure. It may have occurred on Ontario Northland buses travelling from Toronto’s Union Station at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14 to North Bay with transfer service to Sudbury. Anyone on that route should monitor for symptoms.
 

Air quality statements in effect for Timmins, Elliot Lake

Environment Canada says an air quality statement is in effect for the Timmins and Elliot Lake areas. High levels of air pollution due to smoke from ongoing forest fires are in the area. Smoke plumes from active fires in northwestern Ontario and eastern Manitoba will continue, resulting in poor air quality. Low visibilities can also be expected, particularly in areas closer to the fires. Several areas across the North East have reported smelling smoke.
 

“State of Emergency” on Manitoulin Island over

A ‘state of emergency on Manitoulin Island is over. It was declared in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands after a water pump failed at the Little Current water treatment plant. Mayor Alan MacNevin says through the focused efforts of the Ontario Clean Water Agency the plant is running at a normal capacity once again.
 

MTO announces 524 closed at Commanda Creek Bridge

The MTO has announced a bridge and road closure. Highway 524 will be fully closed at Commanda Creek Bridge, located between Weller Road and Commanda Lake Road. The bridge will remain closed until the replacement bridge currently under construction can be opened to the public in approximately four weeks.
 

Two new wildfires announced in the NorthEast

The Ministry of Natural Resources has confirmed two new wildfires in the north. One is North Bay 15, not yet under control at 0.1 of a hectare. It is located on the northern shore of Lady Evelyn Lake. The other is in the Wawa area. There are currently 13 other active fires in the region.
 

Single-vehicle crash takes out two new wildfires

A single-vehicle crash is under investigation. It happened in Sault Ste Marie over the weekend on Wallace Terrace between First and Second Ave. The truck hit three utility poles before coming to a stop. There is no word as to what led to the crash nor injuries or charges.

APH announces swimming advisories at two Elliot Lake Beaches

Algoma Public Health has issued swimming advisories two beaches in Elliot Lake. Water samples taken from Spruce and Spine Beaches have shown high levels of bacteria. The Health Unit says it is unsafe to swim at beaches with increased levels of bacteria. When sample results return to safe levels, the advisory will be removed.
 

Flood statement upgraded to a watch

A Flood Outlook Statement issued yesterday by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority has been upgraded to a Flood Watch. It is for Chippewa Creek due to significant rainfall. The Chippewa Creek water level gauge indicates that the creek has risen 1 metre and is currently just below the top of bank level. The Flood Outlook statement remains in effect for the remainder of the watershed.
