Unionized healthcare workers continue to Rally at HSN

Unionized healthcare workers continue to rally at the Paris Street entrance of Health Science North all to push for better protective equipment against COVID-19 and to push back against Bill 124. The rally participants included registered practical nurses, personal support workers, others. They are among nearly 70,000 hospital workers across Ontario currently negotiating a new provincial contract.
 

Fifth Line East closed today in Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste Marie drivers are being given the heads up that part of Fifth Line East will be closed today. It’s all for the replacement of a cross culvert. The closure runs from Great Northern Road to Schultz Road. Fifth Line East is expected to reopen to traffic on Friday evening.
 

Counterfeit $100 bills circulating in Timmins

Timmins Police is currently investigating a growing number of instances where counterfeit $100 bills are being circulated in the city. Local residents and retailers are advised to be particularly alert when receiving $100 bills in Canadian currency in the course of conducting financial transactions.
 

Rainfall this weekend expected to help with forest fires

Heavy rainfall this weekend is helping to keep forest fires under control in Northeastern Ontario. Currently, 11 active fires spread across the region. Of these, 10 are being observed for ecological purposes and Sault Ste. Marie 14, north of Iron Bridge, is burning at 0.1 hectares and is under control. The fire hazard remains low, with more precipitation expected in the coming days.
 

Copper Cliff power outage (UPDATE: Restored)

Power has been restored following an outage yesterday in Copper Cliff. The first call came in just before 8pm. Crews were called in after a large tree dropped on a power line on Nickel St. Power was back on roughly an hour later. There is no word as to how many were affected in total.
 

Multi-Vehicle collision under investigation in Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste Marie Police continue to investigate the multi-vehicle collision which took place on July 26. It happened in the 2600 block of Great Northern Road. Four vehicles in total were involved. A minivan traveling southbound crossed the center line striking a northbound pickup truck hauling a trailer. Following the initial collision, a pickup truck traveling southbound struck the minivan from behind. A northbound cube truck took evasive action and ended up in the ditch, but did not strike any of the involved vehicles. A number of people were taken to the hospital.

Police will be watching for the “Big Four” this weekend

Meanwhile, Timmins Police say this morning marks the start of the long weekend for many and they will be on full alert. Constable Marc Depatie spoke to KFM news and says Police will be watching for aggressive driving, impaired driving, distracted driving, and a failure to buckle up.
 

Remediation of 45m of Chippewa Creek will see a new bridge

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority will begin work next week on the remediation of 45m of Chippewa Creek. It’s at Oak St and reestablish the Kinsmen Trail link across the creek with a new pedestrian bridge. The hope is that the new pedestrian bridge will provide a significant enhancement to the City’s active transportation network.
 

Nearly 80% of within the PHSD vaccinated with both shots

As vaccine clinics continue, Public Health Sudbury & Districts say nearly 70% (69.2) percent of people older than 12 have now been vaccinated against COVID-19 with both shots. More than 80 percent have received at least one dose, bringing the area closer to the health unit’s goal of getting 90 percent of people in its coverage area fully vaccinated.
 

Algoma U announces Aviation programs in Brampton

A new aviation course is soon pulling up at Algoma University’s Brampton campus.
This initiative will make Algoma U one of only three universities in the province offering aviation programming. Registration is now open with the Aviation Management Professional Program and the Aviation Management Certificate programs, starting this September.
