Sudbury city council considering funding requests for 2022 budget

Sudbury city council will meet this week, to consider taxpayer money requests. Three of them. On Tuesday, councillors will look at business cases city staff will be asked to prepare for council’s 2022 budget deliberations. They include a $260,000 request for Place des Arts, and a $30-million francophone arts centre that will open in downtown Sudbury next year.
 

City of Greater Sudbury replacing subsidized housing units with seniors housing

The city of Greater Sudbury is putting a number of subsidized housing units up for sale. Currently, 14 single-family dwellings are being put up for sale one at a time with a number already being sold. The city says they’re not downsizing and will be replacing these with 14-unit seniors housing project on Sparks St. which are slated to open next year.
 

East Ferris Community Centre opens today

The East Ferris Community Centre is opening starting today. Located on Village Road in Astorville, the centre holds both an arena and curling rink, along with a banquet hall and kitchen. The municipality has released a vaccination policy, citing “all patrons entering” the community centre and arena are “required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19,” along with proof of identification.
 

Sudbury Police respond to Bruce Ave incident, one deceased

Greater Sudbury Police have increased their presence in the area of Bruce Avenue area of the city, following an incident late Monday, where Police say in a tweet One person has been confirmed deceased. They do say this appears to be a targeted incident, and public safety remains top priority.
 

Hydro one working at Timmins Memorial Cemetary

Hydro One is continuing its work at the Timmins Memorial Cemetery. The company is refurbishing equipment on two transmission towers and overhead lines at the Pine Street South cemetery. According to the city of Timmins, the work will continue until Nov. 2nd.
 

Fire under investigation in Sault Ste Marie at Board Office

A construction trailer fire is now under investigation. It happened in Sault Ste Marie at the Algoma District School Board headquarters building on Albert Street East. It happened over the weekend. While the flames were brought under control within minutes, preventing damage to heavy machinery nearby, Police have deemed the blaze suspicious.
 

Rainbow Board reports 5-new cases of COVID-19

Heading into this week, the Rainbow District School Board is reporting five cases of COVID-19 at Lansdowne Public School and one at Lasalle Secondary School. According to the boards website, all of the cases affect students. Both schools will remain open, and there is no evidence of transmission at the schools at this time, said letters issued to parents and guardians.
Meanwhile, 
A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at an Englehart school. It pertains to a single class. All affected staff and students have been contacted and contact tracing related to the outbreak has already been completed by Timiskaming Health Unit. The notice does not say how many cases are at the school.
 

Unemployment down slightly in Greater Sudbury

Greater Sudbury’s unemployment is down slightly, according to Stats Canada. In its monthly Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate was 8.7 per cent in August, and 8.4 per cent in September. They note, despite the pandemic, it is marginally lower than it was in the same month a year ago.
 

Manitoulin OPP lift “Shelter in place” in Billings

Manitoulin OPP has lifted a shelter in place warning for Billings Township. This is following an incident, allegedly involving a barricaded individual that has ended safely. For a time, OPP say there were tense moments on the island after police asked people to stay away from Main Street for an active investigation.
