Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School opens new wing

A Greater Sudbury School is stretching its legs thanks to a new elementary wing. Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School in Hanmer cut the ribbon this week. Key features of the upgrades at Bishop Alexander Carter include a renovated gymnasium and eight new, modern and spacious classrooms.
 

Ski Hill benefits from $100k from the Province

Laurentian Ski Hill has is benefiting from a $100k infuse from the Province. The ski hill was one of nine local organizations to share $425,900 through the Community Building Fund’s operating stream of the Ontario Trillium Foundation this week. It will go to assist with purchasing a new, contactless point-of-sale system and compatible technology, as well as help with rent and water costs.
 

OPP in Kirkland Lake seize $1,200 in narcotics

The OPP North East Region Community Street Crime Unit has pulled $1,200 worth of narcotics off the streets. This is following the search warrant at a residence on Taylor Avenue in the town of Kirkland Lake. Police seized drugs suspected to be opioids. Three people between the ages of 35 – 56 are facing charges.
 

One person in custody, following weapons complaint

Sault Ste Marie have one person in custody. This is following a report of one person with a weapon in the area of Old Garden River Road. It resulted in a “Hold a Secure” for a local school. It was resolved peacefully. No physical injuries were reported and criminal charges are pending.
 

New App released for businesses to check passports

The Ontario government has released an app for businesses. It will allow them to scan an enhanced COVID-19 vaccine certificate. More is expected from the Ford Government is expected an announcement this morning. Ontario announced last month that designated higher-risk businesses and organizations — such as gyms and indoor movie theatres — would need to begin screening patrons for their proof of vaccination before allowing them to enter.
 

Two vehicle collision snarls traffic is Sault Ste Marie

There’s no word as to the cause of a motor vehicle collision in Sault Ste Mare, during the drive home yesterday. It happened on Second Line West near Cooper Street shortly before 4:30. Police, fire, and EMS attended the scene. Traffic on Second Line West was backed up in both directions for a time. There is no word as to injuries.
 

Health until working to contain COVID outbreak

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is working to contain a COVID-19 outbreak declared in connection with an encampment in downtown Sudbury. On Tuesday, Public Health Sudbury and Districts warned of a potential public exposure at Memorial Park. At that time, the health unit said there were three cases connected with the outbreak, and the risk of exposure was ongoing.
 

Docks in West Nipissing out for the season

The docks in West Nipissing are coming out. The work has already begun at the Minnehaha Bay Municipal Marina. Once their out from Cache Bay and at the Sturgeon River House Museum on October 18. The boats are gone as owners were given ample notice to remove their vessels.
 

Timmins Police release tentative budget for 2022

The Timmins Police board has approved the 2022 budget. It now just needs to go through city council. It would see a hike of 3.16 percent. Salaries and benefits make up 87 percent of the total $17.2M budget. It also includes the installation of an Automated Licence Plate Recognition System (ALPRS) in one of its cruisers.
 

Humber and Sault College pen new deal

Sault College and Humber College have joined together virtually deal. It’s new official Memorandum of Understanding for the co-delivery of the Bachelor of Engineering – Mechatronics program. It allows students to study in the emerging field at either Sault College – Sault Ste. Marie Campus or Humber’s North Campus in Etobicoke. 65 seats are available in the program.
