6-months given to man, after fatal drug deal

A 22-year old Sudbury man, with no prior record, will now spend nearly half of 2018 behind bars and the next two years on probation. This is following a six-month jail sentence for selling “hard” drug to a friend who, after using them, wound up in hospital and died. He’s also pleaded guilty to trafficking in a controlled substance known commonly as MDA, or Ecstasy.
 

OPP will take over policing in West Nipissing

A report today says that the OPP will take over policing of West Nipissing next year. West Nipissing council voted 6-3 Tuesday night to accept the OPP proposal that will see the West Nipissing Police Service disbanded. Transition costs would include $8 million to build a new facility.
 

Parking meter fines going up

Timmins City Council says that parking meter fines are on the way up. From $8 to $15… and that’s just for early payment. The move was made this week, and matched the overtime parking fines in both North Bay and Thunder Bay. Sudbury has the highest with $25 for early payment while Sault Ste. Marie remains at $10.
 

Money headed to playgrounds in Greater Sudbury

More money will now be headed to Sudbury Play grounds in 2018. The decision was made this week that improvements will be made at 58 playgrounds. The funds – formally known as healthy community initiative funds – will provide $50,000 a year for each ward for neighborhood projects.

10 new reasons to STOP in Batchewana First Nation

Batchewana First Nation Territory, just north of Sault Ste. Marie are reminding motorists heading through the area that new stops signs are in place. Ten of them the signs are posted in both Ojibway and English. The fine for running a stop sign is fine of $110 and three demerit points.
