Search for a missing senior ends in tragedy

The search for an elderly Sudbury man has ended in tragedy. 73-year-old André Joseph Gagne was reported nearly 2 days ago… and yesterday his remains were located about 2 ½ km in the bush of Highway 144 near Lively. Officers had found Gagne’s vehicle parked on the side of the road. A K9 track was started, and officers started a ground search.
 

School must close, or there will be layoffs

If schools don’t close doors, lay offs will begin. That was the warning from Near North School Board Chair David Thompson yesterday at the School Board’s monthly board meeting. The meeting, attended by roughly 75 staff, parents and students, brought a barrage of questions as why the board chose to close Widdifield Secondary School and keep Chippewa Secondary School and West Ferris Intermediate Secondary School open. The current closure is slated for 2019.
 

First Nations Advisory Committee approved

Timmins City Council has voted in favour of creating a First Nations Advisory Committee. The Mayor told attendees yesterday that the last Census showed over 10 per cent of the city’s population is Indigenous, and that creating a committee to solve issues revolving around race, is important.
 

Power goes out for Huron Shores residents

The lights went out for roughly 1,300 customers yesterday… near Sault Ste. Marie. It happened in the Thessalon, and Huron Shores and Thessalon areas of Algoma. The power went down at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday and much of the power was back on by midnight. While the cause is not clear, a reminder was given out to the public… to stay clear of downed power lines.
 

Dionne Quintuplets birth “an unprecedented event”

The federal government has deemed the birth of the Dionne Quintuplets as a National event. The story of the Quints was among 12 events, people or places given the designation this week. The government says the birth and survival of “five identical, premature and undersized” babies was an unprecedented event that drew international attention.
 

Fatal fire claims one

One person is dead Fatal fire in Sudbury. They say that the fatal fire may have been caused by a pot left unattended on a stove. The call just after 5:30 p.m about a fire at a Jean Street apartment building. The two-storey apartment building contains six units, but only one was damaged.
