Second 3-car-crash in two-days

First, it was the 2nd 3 vehicle accidents in just as many days yesterday, in greater Sudbury. This time OPP responded to an accident in Coniston. Few details are available, but the incident took place at the corner of the Kingsway and Second Avenue. EMS and Police responded. Traffic was reduced to one lane during the drive home.
 

Highway 17 closed due to smoke

Highway 17 between Highway 531 and Rutherglen was closed just after 3:00pm yesterday, just east of North Bay. It all happened at around 4:00pm. OPP said it is believed it started as a grass fire and spread to a structure. Volunteer firefighters and the Ministry of Natural Resources also responded. The highway reopened at around 6pm.
 

Timmins, Sudbury Mayors running for re-election

With May 1 being the official municipal election opening nomination day, Timmins Mayor Steve Black wasted no time, putting his name back in the hat for re-election. The bid is still considered unofficial until the close on formal nominations on July 27th. The election is, Monday October 22, 2018.
Meanwhile, Mayor Brian Bigger says that with the arrival of May, he’s not only honored and proud serving as Mayor of the city of Greater Sudbury… he has filed for re-election. At this point, the Mayor says he has yet to file… any bid is still considered unofficial until the close on formal nominations on July 27th. The election is, Monday October 22, 2018.
 

Water Safety statements issued for Soo, North Bay

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority has issued a watershed conditions statement to residents. They say that 10-15 mm of rain in the next 24 hours, mixed with snow melt could create some concern when it comes to being around waterways. While there is no need to take action yet, the Authority says that residents should exercise caution.
Meanwhile, a water safety statement is in effect for North Bay District, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry advises. Water safety indicates that high flows, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous but flooding is not expected. The district is forecast to receive 10-20 mm of rain beginning last night and lasting into Wednesday.
 

Meeting slated for Maley Drive Extension

Residents near the area where the Maley Drive extension is being built have been invited to a public meeting Wednesday for an update on the project. Staff and contractors working on the $80 million project will be on hand to give a presentation and answer questions. The meeting will be held at Ernie Checkeris Public School, 1570 Agincourt Ave., from 5-8 p.m. The presentation will take place at 6:30.
