Forest Fire Season sees 240 hectares lost so far

The forest fire season has sparked up once again, almost without warning in the mind of some. As of yesterday, 107 forest fires in Ontario burning 240 hectares. This is a 200% increase over last year when 52 fires took out 50 hectares burned. Four of those fires were in the Sudbury region.
 

Tax increase laid out for Callander residents

Callander’s average 2018 residential tax increase is out for local residence. Combined municipal and education taxes has come up at $71. $101 was the increase in 2017. The 2018 tax levy increase in property taxes needed to balance the budget is 3.72 per cent, down from 6.15 per cent in 2017.
 

Back pack thief wanted in Sault Ste. Marie

Crime Stoppers and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are asking for your assistance in identifying a suspect in a theft. Julianne Kent is with Crime Stoppers and says it all began when someone allegedly forgot their backpack.

Recycling squeeze could cost Sudbury

A decision in China to tightly restrict the type of recycled products they will accept, is now effecting in Greater Sudbury. China is a world leader when it comes to processing material out of the blue box. But now, a report headed to the city’s finance committee says the city is looking at a drop-in recycling revenue of $1.1 million. The city says that although revenue sharing will help, a shortfall of about $550,000 is forecast this year.
 

New Health Centre opens this week

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit opened their band new facility this week on Oak Street West. Dr. Jim Chirico is the Medical Officer of Health and says that in addition to new and improved services, they’re making the new Health Unit as family friendly as possible.

 

New routes for Soo Transit

Meanwhile, Sault Ste. Marie Transit Services say their implementing new bus routes and schedules. This is after the City of Sault Ste. Marie completed its Transit Optimization Study. Sam Piaino is with the Transit Authority and spoke to us with details.

New Projects on Sudbury Roads this week

The Kingsway will see a closing a westbound lane intermittently between Silver Hills Drive and Bancroft Drive beginning May 14 until June 1. Work will be done between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

 Various Locations: Fencing that requires excavation work on Robin Street, Beatrice Crescent, Jumbo Road, Kari Road, Desloges Road, Sunnyside Road and McKenzie Road.

MR55 between Kelly Lake Road and Balsam Street: Denis Gratton Construction will be performing sanitary sewer work which will reduce the eastbound lane to one lane from 500m west of the Big Nickel Mine Road off ramp, to Kelly Lake Road.
