Maley Drive Project running a surplus

The Maley Drive extension project is running a surplus. That’s what Sudbury city councillors will hear next week. A surplus big enough to extend the four-laning of a section originally planned for two lanes. The project, which will be completed at the end of 2019, is running a $4 million surplus, thanks largely to lower-than-forecast bids on contract tenders.
 

Highway 17 closed down following collision

Meanwhile, highway 17 was closed following a serious two-vehicle collision. It happened yesterday, just east of Mattawa. The OPP was forced to shut down the highway for some time without a detour. Information on the crash, detailing the cause, has not been released.
 

Two residents charges, one with attempted murder

Two Timmins residents in the 20’s have been charged following an assault. One, a woman has been charged with attempted murder following an altercation involving an “edged weapon” at the intersection of Mountjoy Street North and Sixth Avenue. A 24-year-old female victim was treated at the Timmins and District Hospital for injuries.
 

Construction begins this week, on SAH

Construction on the north end of Sault Area Hospital will begin this week. The city says its all to addressing white staining on the brickwork. This is the continuation of an ongoing project. All work will be carried out during daylight hours, with minimal noise. The work will continue into Winter.
 

Sudbury more cycle friendly?

Despite the fact that Sudbury is hoping to become a more pedestrian and cycle-friendly, the operations committee turned down a resolution this week “to develop the complete streets design guidelines and implementation strategy” The idea, if accepted would have become a budget option in 2019. The city would have been only the sixth municipality in Ontario to work towards a complete streets model.
 

Pilot injured in float plane crash

A lone pilot has sustained minor injuries following a float plane crash on the south shore of Lake Nipissing. It happened between Mine island and the mouth of the South River. Reports say that the 55-year-old male pilot from Sturgeon Falls was trying to land his aircraft at the time. The pilot was rescued by a nearby boater and transported to hospital by ambulance.

Library undergoes name change

In Sault Ste Marie, the downtown library has undergone a name change. The half-century-old structure was re-named the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library in recognition of the Soo’s former mayor, who died in February, 2015, at age 88. McIntyre’s granddaughter, Lauren Carter, returned to the Sault from London, England for the unveiling this week.
