Child Poverty is something that we know exists in the world, but what about right here at home? That’s exactly what the Child Poverty by Ridings report, issued this week uncovered by the non-partisan group Campaign 2000. According to the report, one fifth of Sudbury’s children are living in a state of poverty, while in Nickel Belt, the rate is about half that. In this largely rural district, one in 10 kids aged 0 to 17 is considered impoverished.
In Nippising just over 3,000 children have a low-income status in the riding, making up 17.5 per cent of the total population of children. In Ontario, parts of Ottawa have rates of less than six per cent, while in Toronto that number of four out of every 10. Headquartered in Toronto, Campaign 2000 is a cross-Canada network of 120 organizations committed to working to end child and family poverty.
