Former assistant prof to serve weekend time behind bars

A former assistant in the School of Social Work at Laurentian University has been sentenced weekend time on impaired driving charges. This is after the 60-year-old pled guilty to two incidents. The first happened on Canada day last year, the second happened in June of this year. As a result of the five guilty pleas, the Crown dropped seven other charges.
 

Judge Ave. open following accident

For those in North Bay headed out the door this morning, Judge Ave has once again opened, following a single car accident just before 11 am yesterday. Reports say that the car had badly damaged a traffic light at the intersection of Judge and Lakeshore. As a result, the roadway was completely closed.
 

Lisa Bertrand named Culturel La Ronde executive

The Centre Culturel La Ronde in Timmins has a new executive director. Lisa Bertrand has been hired as the new lead for the organization. She will implement community events and spearheading major fundraisers. Since the 2015 fire that led to the demolition of the last centre the organization has been temporarily housed in the St-Charles school.
 

GFL Memorial Gardens to remain with city

Sault Ste. Marie City Council have agreed to continue operating GFL Memorial Gardens with city staff, and not hiring a private management firm. It was asked by two councilors that privatizing be considered at the former Essar Centre. But after a Greyhounds playoff run this past season the entertainment venue is currently running a surplus.
 

Bartolucci will act as campaign manager

Former Ontario cabinet minister Rick Bartolucci says he will be involved in this October’s municipal election. Bartolucci, who was a councilor in the former Region of Sudbury and is also a former Liberal MPP will be helping Mayor Brian Biggers re-election campaign. While he’s not running it, Bartolucci has confirmed he’ll be helping the campaign.
 

Two sought, following assault

Sudbury Police say they are searching for two people after an assault on Louis Street. Officers say a brown or beige van, driven by a woman with a man in the passenger seat, pulled up to next to a pedestrian, when the man got out and assaulted the victim. The accused then got back in the van. The two suspects then allegedly hit the 28-year-old man with the van and drove off. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Descriptors: Police say the woman driving the van is described as in her 20’s with a slim build and black hair. The man in the van is between 20 and 30 years old with very short black hair. Police say he wasn’t wearing a shirt at the time of the assault.
The van the pair were in is described as beige or brown in colour with a smashed rear window.
