New facility unveiled in Laurentian University

Laurentian University says that a new facility has been unveiled. Called the Cliff Fielding Research, Innovation and Engineering Building, the school says its been a whirlwind on account that they had to meet a number of tight timelines in order to open in time. They say that the $30 million 60,000-square-foot building was finished in two years, on time and on budget. It is slated to provide a collaborative research hub for Laurentian research centres in what the school calls a state-of-the-art analytical facility.
 

Driver charged after truck winds up in waterway

The driver of the tractor trailer that wound up in Angus lake Sunday, has been charged. It was shortly after 7am Sunday when the southbound tractor-trailer left the road south of Temagami. The highway had to be closed in both directions as a result of live hydro lines that were on the roadway. The two occupants were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 39-year-old is failure to drive within a marked lane.
 

Advanced online polling begins early October

Those who feel like it’s been campaigning enough will be able to vote as early as this Monday. Timmins Residents will be able to beat the rush at the polling station and the crowd through advance online for the fall municipal election. The city says they’re trying to make sure people outside of the urban centre of Timmins have the opportunity to vote in advance.
 

Fish tank thieves wanted by Police

Sudbury Police are looking for information on those responsible for driving off with a fish tub from a local school property. They say that the location was on Lasalle Boulevard, and that the alleged perpetrators, accessed the property from Cambrian Heights Drive. The two suspects then exited the vehicle and loaded one of the tubs into the truck and then drove away on Lasalle Boulevard toward Frood Road. The value of the stolen property is $2,500.
 

Gas leak closes down highway (Update: Reopened)

A Natural gas leak snagged up traffic for some time in Trout Creek yesterday. Ontario 511 says that for a short time was no access into Trout Creek and an evacuation was put into place. Highway 522 and Highway 522B are closed in both directions at Highway11. While details on the leak itself are few the area has been reopened, and there is no threat to public safety.
 

Timmins arrest “Break and Enter” thieves

Timmins Police say two are in custody following a alleged “break and enter”. They say the call went out regarding the incident in progress in the area of Cloutier Street South. The two men, matching descriptions to the suspects were located near the scene. The 52, and the 39 year old, both of Timmins, have been charged with one count each of Trespass By Night and Possession of Break-in Instruments.

September declared “Child Cancer Awareness” month

Stats Canada says that cancer in children effects as many as one in 285 children before the age of 20 and now Sault Ste. Marie is joining the fight through awareness support, and a new flag at the Civic Centre this week. Mayor Christian Provenzano has subsequently proclaimed that September is now be Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the Soo.
