50-years of Nursing at Laurentian

This weekend brings with it a landmark anniversary. Saturday marks the 50th Anniversary of Laurentian University’s School of Nursing. The school says that an event is planned to that end, geared to look back at the changing roles of nurses during the last five decades.
 

Local residents are “satisfied”

Overall residents are happy, but they do have a few suggestions. That is according to a survey that has come back from Callander residents this week. The numbers that that many are “satisfied” with the overall quality of municipal services and small-town atmosphere. They do that township communication, some roads, along with the library could use a little TLC.
 

Student remembered in Timmins, for wit and smile

Despite the snow, Golden Avenue Public School in Timmins has a new garden. Planted this fall, it is all in memory of a student that no longer walks the halls. Kyle Lecuyer passed away in September 2016 from a battle with cancer. He was remembered this week as witty and charming student with a great laugh. He was in grade 6.
 

Drug bust nets three

A major drug bust has gone down in Sault Ste. Marie. It involved at least one search along with a traffic stop. Officers from a number of investigating units say that three individuals have been taken into custody. A wide range of drugs has been seized, along with weapons. The total street value of the drugs seized was $39,551.
 

Indigenous engagement put into place

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is calling it a first. The group says this week, the first Indigenous engagement strategy has been put into place. Titled Finding our Path Together, the strategy has been developed in collaboration with Indigenous community partners. Details aside, the group says it this strategy and the actions described are the culmination of an extensive collaborative process intended to be “mutually beneficial, respectful, and strengths-based”.
 

NDP leader hears about Housing Crisis

NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh was in Timmins yesterday. Singh spoke with students at a number of schools, along with a local businesses and Indigenous leaders about some of the region’s issues. Singh says one thing that he heard about was the homeless population. He says it is an issue that is being talked about talked about coast to coast.
