City Council gives casino a nod

A Casino is headed to North Bay. Supported by the majority of city council and opposed by a number of the community in attendance, the motion passed 8 – 3 vote is support of the plan Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited unfolded. Gateway now plans to open the casino in North Bay in the first quarter of 2020, spending roughly $31 million on the Project. Coun. Mark King, one of three opposed to the casino, wanting the matter to go to committee, gave notice of reconsideration, which means there will be another vote on the matter during the next council meeting. It’s unlikely, however, that the outcome will change.
 

Sudbury looking for GSU payments

Sudbury City council is going ahead to have staff develop a policy that will see Greater Sudbury Utilities pay the city a share of its net profits. The decision was made this week but saw the rejection a motion that would have required the first payment of $1 million by September 2019. There is some concern that a short timeline would force the GSU to raise rates or delay capital work to secure the funds.
 

Water ban lifted

Residents in Foleyet can drink their water again. This is after Public Health Sudbury Districts laid down a drinking water advisory that has since been lifted. At the time (Sunday) they said that a power outage resulted in low water pressure, allowing contaminants to get into the water.
 

City Councillors receive iPads for 2019

New Technology is helping Sault Ste. Marie city council into 2019. Councillors have received new ipads to be used for city business and during city council. The one-time cost for the new technology for the 2019-2022 council costs just over $12,700 taken from a computer and communication equipment fund.
 

Wanted: Austin Ashawasagai, 23


Greater Sudbury Police are requesting the public’s help in locating a wanted man. Austin Ashawasagai, 23, is known to be in Greater Sudbury or the Manitoulin Island area, and is wanted for breach of paroll. He also has several outstanding charges. Ashawasagai is described as 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds, with dark brown hair and brown eyes.
 

Slow down out the door this morning

OPP in Sudbury are reminding drivers to slow down on the way to work and school. They say since November 1st they’ve responded to 94 collisions. Police are reminding motorists to equip their vehicles with winter tires, plan ahead, leave space between vehicles and allow extra time to reach your destination.
