Sudbury taking an over 1/4 million dollar hit… every week

The city of Greater Sudbury continues to get hit hard due to the COVID-19 crisis. A new report prepared by CAO shows that a combination of lost revenue and added costs is creating a $370,000 hole in the city budget each week.

Kashechewan First Nation is putting out a call for help when it comes to spring flooding. They have a vulnerable population affected by the Albany River. A state of emergency declaration has been sent to the Province.
 

International national travel down 90%… over the bridge

The International Bridge between Sault Ste Marie Ontario and Michigan says bridge crossings are now down 90 per cent over last year. A total of just under 9,300 vehicles crossed the bridge last month.
 

All cases of COVID under APH resolved

All of the cases of COVID-19 previously confirmed by Algoma Public Health and the Northwestern Health Unit have reportedly been resolved. As of May 5, there are 170 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in northeastern Ontario.
 

Mattawa  gets $1.3 million for bridge

The Town of Mattawa will receive nearly $1.3 million from the province. government to rehabilitate the main street bridge. The announcement came from Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli yesterday.
 

Fireworks for Victoria Day and Canada Day… a no-go

The city of Greater Sudbury says fireworks before the midpoint of 2020 will be a no-go. City council voted unanimously in favour of amending the city’s fireworks bylaw, effectively cancelling any Victoria Day weekend or Canada Day fireworks celebrations this year.

West Nipissing looking at $32 annual tax increase

West Nipissing taxpayers are looking at a tax increase. A $32 increase on their tax bills this year. A near $27.8-million budget passed by a 5-4 vote, with both the budget chair and the mayor voting against it this week.
 

ONTC issues lay off notices

The ONTC has issued temporary layoff notices to some of its staff. The North Bay-based company says 25 in North Bay and Cochrane are being impacted. They work in several areas including the Polar Bear Express passenger train, Rail Mechanical and Remanufacturing and Repair.
 

COVID-19 Outbreak issued at Golden Manor

The Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) is declaring a COVID-19 outbreak at the Golden Manor. This is after one resident, without symptoms, tested positive. Currently, the risk of infection in the long-term care home is listed as low.

The Manitoulin Health Centre is putting out a reminder that they are open to those in need. This is after some rumour that the emergency departments at both Little Current and Mindemoya were closed. Anyone in need, are welcome to attend.
