Laurentian University  is making Hand Sanitizer

Laurentian now a licensed producer and distributor of hand sanitizer. It’s all part of a project was made possible through cross-departmental collaboration. Ahead of the phased return of on-campus activity, the school launched an in-house project to create its own branded hand sanitizer to distribute throughout campus grounds.
 

Police nab male with counterfit cash

Patrol Services with Sault Ste Marie Police have arrested a 33-year-old for uttering counterfeit money. This is after the accused attended a business in the 100 block of Queen Street East and attempted to use an American counterfeit $100 bill to get change. The bill became lodged in the machine. When the bill was later retrieved, and police were contacted.
 

Cochrane Bypass approved

A highway bypass has been approved for Cochrane. The Government of Ontario is connecting Northeastern Ontario with the long-awaited highway project that will connect Highway 652 to Highway 11, providing an alternate route for travellers and trucks moving goods, reducing traffic on municipal roads.
 

Science North given top honour for Best Program – Large Institution

Science North has been given top spot for Best Program – Large Institution – CASCADE Award for Northern Ontario Science Festivals. This award is given annually by CASC for the best onsite or offsite educational, interpretive, or public program.
 

North Bay moving on Blue Box Transition Program

North Bay council have settled on a preferred a date to transition its Blue Box program. All to companies that make and use packaging material, the move is part of a provincial overhaul of recycling collection in Ontario. Council passed a resolution this week requesting that responsibility of the city’s Blue Box program, including its cost and operation, be transitioned over to producers in 2023.
 

Fire Crews reporting a boost in “careless” fires

Fire crews in Sudbury have been responding to a boost in calls. The city’s deputy chief says many of these are “careless” fires. It’s been going on for three months… many of them are related to cooking, smoking and outdoor burning.

More on recent COVID-19 Cases

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reported a new case of COVID-19 Monday. The case is listed as a man between the age of 60 and 79 and is currently self-isolating. Meanwhile. the two most recent positive COVID-19 cases confirmed by Algoma Public Health late last week have now been identified are staff members in two separate nursing homes. They are now self-isolating.
 

Timmins City Hall offering more services

Timmins City hall has announced the re-opening of additional municipal services. It was announced recently, city hall was partially opened up to allow residents to pay their municipal property taxes and sewer and water bills.
Effective today, June 17… citizens will be able to attend city hall to:
• Purchase parking permits;
• Pay parking tickets;
• Pay for business licenses and lottery licenses;
• Apply for and receive marriage licenses;
• Commissioning;
• Committee of adjustment information, payments, etc.; and
• Permitting and payment for small accessory structures and temporary tent structures.
Effective June 22, citizens will be able to attend city hall to pay fines for provincial offences.
Effective June 24, citizens will be able to attend the building and planning department for complete applications and payment of such.
Then on June 29, the Timmins Museum along with Tourism Timmins will reopen with restricted services.
