State of Emergency in Ontario is extended to July 22

The Ontario government, in consultation with Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, has extended all emergency orders until July 22, 2020. The Province says the extension was made to ensure the province maintains the necessary flexibility to protect public health and safety as more businesses reopen and people go back to work.
 

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is testing for West Nile

Public Health Sudbury and Districts says it will begin testing for the West Nile virus in the region’s mosquito population. In a release Wednesday, the health unit said staff will be trapping and testing mosquitoes again this year starting this month and continuing to the late summer of 2020.
 

NIP U announces a new interim president and vice-chancellor

Nipissing University’s new interim president and vice-chancellor has officially taken her seat with the post-secondary institution. Cheryl Sutton, the school’s former vice-president of finance and administration succeeded Mike DeGagné who had served as president and vice-chancellor since 2013.
 

Water Bombers battle back against area fires

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry waterbombers were hard at working yesterday to extinguish a small fire near Fairbank Lake yesterday. The Greater Sudbury Fire Services say crews managed to contain the blaze, likely caused by a lightning strike.
In total, there are 22 active fires across the region. Three fires are being held, ten are under control and one is being observed. At the time of the latest MNRF update, there are eight fires that are not yet under control.
Water bombers were also on the scene of a fire this evening about half a kilometre south of Lake Nipissing. Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services says North Bay 27 is about 0.8 of a hectare.
 

Timmins projecting $2.9 million in lost revenue

The city of Timmins is now projecting a $2.9M loss in revenues to end of last month due to COVID-19. Those numbers are still coming in. That said, the region says with just two positive test results since May 10, efforts to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Timmins are proving to be successful.
 

Sault College closing it’s new $2 million dollar centre

After just two years since its opening, the new $2 million-dollar early learning centre at Sault College is closing. With the decision a financially feasible one, it is for the foreseeable future, as the centre is losing the college roughly $500,000 each year.
